Hi all,

Newbie here

I'm after a digital camera. Doesn't have to be too special beyond a) a high resolution (12MP minimum) and b) reliable and likely to last a while. I'm looking into this - http://ubuyhardware.com/p~p-1[....]l-Digital-Camera---Silver.aspx - do you guys think it'd be appropriate? Any suggestions of an alternative?

Thanks in advance!

How much do you have to spend? I would recommend the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT1/TS1 - review
Picture quality is very good and it's perfect for point and shoot because it has lumix intelligent auto which picks optimum settings for the conditions so you don't have to do any of the work.

Chasing mega pixels in a compact is a waste of time, the sensors are too small to use the res fully. Unless you regularly print out poster size prints its a waste too. If the images are not going any further than on a pc screen then anything upto 6/8MP is fine.

Look for something that can be recommended to you from someone who has used one, online reviews are fine but hands on is always better.

I used to think mega-pixels were a waste of time unless you post monster sized photos but they aren't really. Think about cropping pictures, if the action is only taking part in a small section of the view then you can crop then enlarge, 12 MP or beyond is much better than 5/6 MP at this (I've tried it too)
The bad thing about mega-pixels is if lots of them are packed into a tiny sensor, like on my camera, there's 15.5 MP crammed into a tiny sensor, this makes the sensor unsensitive so you get noise at even the lowest sensitivities like ISO 80, and really bad quality at higher ISO settings.
BTW, I have used a TS1, (my friend owns one) and can recommend it, but it depends whether the camera needs to be waterproof, it doesn't specify in the topic overview.
