The BB connection of my friend's G900 keeps activating on its own (BB logo plus globe). He is not using any BB account or service. How does he turn it off?

specify clearly about the BB that you mentioned.
do you mean BlackBerry messenger?
I don't think G900 has it . . .

He said something about the BB and rotating globe logos appearing on top.

I think he means Blackberry Browser and Blackberry Connect.
Use Task Manager to end the application.
If it doesn't work, restart.
If that doesn't work too, master reset.
After the master reset uninstall the BB application.
