Just generally wondering......what is really better 3G 1X CDMA2000 or GSM? If it is 3G 1X CDMA2000, then why are the major players(nokia,SE etc.) still concenterating on GSM, also why are WLL operators (like Reliance) classified as 'LIMITED MOBILITY' operators, when we all know that 3G CDMA can support upto 2400kbps compared to the 144 kbps of GSM.
....... Just wondering |

3G won't be big for another couple of years (at least not in the UK)
The only package at the moment ("3" will soon have launched) will cost around £80 per month with phones costing several hundred pounds |

....And those are the discounted offers available to the first 20,000 subscribers to 3, called 'Founders'. Goodness knows what the rest will have to pay |

Don't think that is quite right. The phones themselves are going to be expensive (around £400 without any discounts) but the is a contract at £60/month.
The tarrifs they have released are both aimed at heavy users though, well heavy users and very heavy users. I think we have to wait and see a bit before we say it will necesasrrily be too expensive, it's too early to tell.

CDMA2000 is the 3G technology developed and supported by Qualcomm and is implemented on the existing CDMA networks. It is faster than GSM and cheaper to implement than WCDMA.
The 3G technology for GSM is called WCDMA and is a new network and therefore more expensive to implement. This is why it is so delayed. However, WCDMA has greater speeds than CDMA2000 and it is not protected by any devilish company like Qualcomm.
At the moment the CDMA2000 has an advantage of cost and simpler implementation but in the long run the WCDMA networks will have greater advantages.

Hi there...
Well I heard a rumour that there will be promotional release prices of the handsets of £200ish... so if thats true, and 3 stick to their 03/03/2003 release date, then I may just go for a 3G mobile phone!!
Although I don't think I'd be lucky enough to have Doom/C64/etc.. running on my phone...
Still... video calls!! How voyeristic is that!!

Just remember that to have a videocall you need to have someone else to talk to!!! |

3G is overhyped and will not bring any extra profit to the service providers for a loooooooong time. |

Hi there...
Just got back from being in a human auction for RAG week at Uni.. I went for £12... and I now have to do 3 tasks... (the average price for a single person was about £14, so I'm not too embarassed about it)
I was bought by the people I 10pin bowl with on a wednesday, so they are cool... first task is to cook them all tea tommorow... so it could be worse!!!
ANYWAY... back to the topic in hand...
I know there won't be many people to video call at the moment... but hey... I'm sure there will be other people wandering around the empty spectrum wanting to call other people too... so I'm sure I could find someone to talk to!
