I've understood from the beginning that you cannot pair the two using bluetooth.
There are apps that connect the two via wifi though, such as the Camera app for ipad

I guess its the same with iphone to iphone... its always only a wifi connection in apps when bumping contacts or playing multi player games etc

omg what a joke!
just proves how much of a rip off apple is. yeah the new ipad/iphone look amazing, and has some unique and truely great features, but for the price tag its just madness! id rather pay a little extra and get a top spec laptop, that can actually do everything i want, and is not limited by wifi, or all the other flaws apple has. good product, but still behind on the times in some respects, and it costs double what it should.
edit: was aiming that at the iphone, but guess ill apply that to all apple products.

If you want to use the iPhones internet connection, get your iPhone jailbroken and download mywi in cydia.

Mywi gives you the possibility to tether your iPhone with your iPad over wifi |

The art studio applications has the option to send your easel over bluetooth. When I attempt to transfer my art to ubuntu, ubuntu requests a PIN, in which iPad never gives me this option.. The iPad, however, most likely supports the vast majority of Bluetooth keyboards available because it supports Human Interface Device Profiles — just like most Bluetooth keyboards on the market.
