It can't the screen resolution is not high enough it plays at 480x800 max

Ah I see. Any idea how I can get it to work? Like maybe downsizing 720 to the required size?
Also is there an sound equialiser on the Desire? I can't find it. |

I'm not sure about a sound equaliser but you need some kind of encoding software. I can't link from here but I google'd "convert video for mobile phone freeware" and plenty came up.
You need to encode to MP4 at 480x800

I've used DVD Catalyst for a long time with great results. It has built in configurations for most phones, including this one
