the Phone Self Update has never really found any updates even with past S60

So just wanted to know have any of you been sucessful in getting a
FOTA for your handset without connecting to Nokia PC Suite?
Would like to know

It hardly ever works & it's best just doing it via pc on Nokia Software updater. Why don't you do that? Some networks might not let you do it.

I managed to successfully updated the firmware of Nokia N86 FOTA when I had it.
I took about half an hour using 3G network.

Half an hour bet your battery was flat aye?
If I proceed with a Update I will have to learn how to backup the content of the phone,
lastime i didn't backup I lost Spiderman 2 Movie of my N95-2
X6 has Gavin & Stacey,
well I dislike that but someone else might like it if i sell the handset on next year
btw it's not available as see here :

All S60v5 devices get updates on both FOTA and NSU (NOKIA Software Updater), the new FW for X6 and 5230 was only just released it will take a few days maybe even weeks to get on FOTA. It also depends if your network has released if its a branded phone. 3 of the FW updates on my 5800xm were done via FOTA, each took around 10-15mins via HSDPA to download and install.

S60v5 has UDP (User-Data Preservation), so you can update without backing up and EVERYTHING will still be there after the update whether its via NSU or FOTA. If you do wana back-up then go to the File Manager in your X6 and there should be a back up option under Phone Memory, Mass Memory, then there should be a Backup option there as well, go into it, Backup Contents, and choose either All or select the one you wana backup, after that do the update, everything should still be there, if not go to that Backup option, click options, Restore. hope that helps.

When I had the old 5530 it kept coming up on screen an update maybe due for your phone but when I did it it never worked. I prefer just doing it via pc anyway

Always best to do what wotks for you. I use FOTA because i hate dealing with NSU, ive had errors randomly appear during an update, theres a better chance of bricking the phone with NSU than with FOTA, as FOTA downloads only the stuff that needs to be updated and added, and not the whole firmware which is already in the phone like NSU does, thats why FOTA updates are like maximum 25mb.

You need to actually go into it press options and exit that way it properly disconnects. I hope.

Sometimes there is a setting in connectivity menu and it says packet data you select always online or when needed. Not sure.

I wouldnt worry too much about Nokia Messaging, mine runs all day online, hardly affects battery or RAM, but if you do wana turn it off go to Options with in the app, Settings, General, go to the bottom, Application startup, set it to Manual.
