I was wondering if it is possible to trace your mobile using GPS or something similar, such as remotely recieving information about the cell the phone is located.
Any info would be appreciated.

Not sure exactly what you mean, but if it`s any use the police in UK have access to all registered mobile phone users details allowing them to track a person using the phones proximaty to the mast possitions.
There are many cases of criminals being caught by having their phones with them while in a place that they later deny being at.
Evidence of mobile phone possition is being used to prossecute IRA bombers at the moment.they were all making calls near the scene at the time but gave completely different stories & claimed they were miles away.
Also a stolen car was found while still being driven by the thief because cops used the owners girlfriends phone to track it (in glove box).
I`m told also that the phone can be switched off & it still works as the battery is still connected (sounds wrong to me).
So the trick is fairly simple use a "pay as you go" type sim & don`t register it. this is what "sensible" criminals do, because you can get them for £5, BUT if you do that & then commit a crime & then get caught WITH that phone on you, the tracing of previous calls can still be looked at & it could STILL incriminate you.
This info is prob not what you were asking but thought it might be interesting. |

i think/wish the t68i has e911 feature which you need not tell the emergency team your location. |

Thanks heaps Pachy, thats exactly what I'm after.
Is there any civilian equipment/software available to keep track of your mobile using the same method?
I've heard that a certain german telco supplies this service from their web site for all customers.
Also theres the echelon factor, tracing from satelites.
Being in the Army i had 'access' to this sort of thing on a drasticly modified version, find this officer, that officer when something goes on, but i couldn't trace just anyone.
Any information will be helpful, and is a mobile tacable even with a new SIM card, so if a theif changes SIM can he be traced to the phone using the IMEI number or something?

Better yet can a GPS module be put in our phone ex. T68i, P800 etc for tracking purposes... Natural disaster, crimes or simple absent mindness

OK, anyone who has seriously owned a GPS receiver knows that GPS tracking is NOT a reliable way of tracking criminals... you'd have to be a really stupid criminal to hold a GPS antenna over your head to be tracked.
GPS receivers are very very sensitive... trees, clouds, the glove box of the car that it's in...all of these things block GPS signals. (Ever wonder why GPS receivers still ahve huge blocky antennas?)
GSM tracking is done via cell-triangulation. Smart Telecom in the Philippines offers this service to the public. You can also "hide" yourself if you don't wish to be found by just anyone... the authorities have full access to location services, regardless of your status (hidden/visible)
e911 services are not standard. Not all mobile phones have this feature, and only the US has this service up and running... and since the US is the last priority on the GSM market, e911 features will probably be one of the last features phone manufacturers will add to a GSM phone. Motorola would probably be the first to incorporate this feature.
Remember, if you can track another mobile phone, others can track you as well. This service can easily be used by terrorists to determine population in any given area to maximize bomb threats, etc... be careful of what you wish for...you just might get it.
If you just want a personal GPS system that works in the city... Symbian users can use miniGPS for Series 60 and UIQ based smartphones. (UIQ version still under development) |

There is a way to trace a cell by its IMEI no. However, AFAIK its only avaliable to cellular operators.
Whenever you make a phone call, your cells IMEI number is also registered with the operator. The operators can then trcae ur cellphone.

@Avinash, To be fair imei tracing by operators is still done using the sim, because they only get the imei when you sim is live to their network.to reduce mobile theft in UK all the operators have a shared imei database which i would be surprised if "the powers that be" don`t cross reference it with sim info.
When you think about it, everywhere we go & everyone we talk to is on record somwhere & unless you are happy to keep changing your mobile number by using unregistered prepay sims this will stay with us.
It`s like an invisible identity card.

Orange uk offer a service which traces ur phone and can tell u where your nearest cash-point, garage etc. is, but in pretty sure it only works 4 orange uk customers. Its on their wapsite, maybe your provides has a similar service, ask them. Btw it only works he you have a pretty good signal

also, does n e 1 know where I cld get a map of a city (montreal) with street names and put it on my P800?
maybe a proggy like TomTom..
