I need the data counters as well.
You can see them on the secret menu but it is boring to access

You can get the 'secret menu', by dialing the following (note that it needs to be dialed manually... saving the number in your contacts won't work):

On a similar vein, anyone come across a screen showing you the IP details on either the WLAN or 3G and not via the hidden menu?

WLAN IP you can find in the wifi settings.
Once you have a WLAN connection, click it and there´s the details !

I installed 3G Watchdog, it gives you some info on 3G data.
Not perfect but at least something.

Download the widget Data Counter in the market. It gives you a quick view on the desktop. Click on it and you will get data for mobile network, wifi and bluetooth valid for day, week, month.
