hello!
haven't been here since i got my trusty n82!
currently i have the palm pre....great but has too many issues
the battery lasts only 10 hours, i'd be lucky to get a day out of it!
no msn support, you can't set an alarm for when you want, etc etc

so i was thinking of getting rid of it and getting somethibg else....

was looking at the satio and the n97, since both are cheap-ish.
just wondering if you guys recommend them, as the info i can find about them is a bit like marmite!

i need email (push or at least adjustable timing)
good battery,
maps ( turn by turn would be great)
and above all, a realiable phone!

thanks in advance

Bit devil and the deep blue sea if reliability/stability is one of your priorities

To be honest I'd try and hold off a few months for some of the new handsets coming (not all are going to be top-end priced) or for some of the currently available to decline (ie Google Nexus or HTC equiv or current iPhone 3GS to decline before/just after new version in Summer) or see how products like the HTC legend are priced or the HTC Legend is priced.

If you have to choose between the two you mentioned for a start I'd probably rule out the N97 classic (I speak as a "happy" or is it stupid N97 Classic owner)and go for the N97 mini instead, you give up FM Transmitter and get only 8GB of mass storage and no cover to camera lense and not only smaller screen but non transflective (somewhat brighter indoors but waashes out in bright light), In exchange you get firmware that was much better to start with, twice the size of C: (inernal phone storage for software updates, apps etc. not to be confused with the E: mass storages) and the phone is much more comfortable to operate with one hand (if you want that) and feels/is better built additionally doing away with the soppy D pad has made the mini's keyboard much easier to operate as it sits more "equally" between your thumbs (personally I find the offset space bar a non issue - in fact quite natural after 2days - possibly an improvement as it's under thumb) also it's been spaced out and some change in the key orientations have made quite a bit of difference I believe. However they didn't upgrade the insufficient 128MB RAM and the 434MHz proccy is still not really adequate for today's needs either. You do however get some elements of SF^2 features - kinetic scrolling, homescreen widgets (though teses mostly suck and suck system resources and powerr so most don't use "active" widgets after a while on homescreen, after all do you want latest weather or battery still alive at end of day?)

The Satio should be the better handset however as ever with SE over the last few years Software is it's bane. S60 v5 standard is really pretty poor and SE have seemingly not implemented any of the improvements that were developed for SF^2 (unlike Nokia). So seemingly it has a wonderful camera but the software is pretty sucky combined with the fact SE have their own skin on top which whilst pretty enough suffers from the customaruy problem with skins in that once you start activating their features at some point you drop back into the base OS and frequently (and in this case too) they don't feel or behave the same and S60 V5 is fiddly enough as it is without having to declutch from Sony stylie to Nokia land so to speak. Why oh why did SE not fund and then junk UIQ we shall never know - they had a technology leading touch UI of their own and they simply dropped it to issue feature phones and are now scrambling around on other peoples OS's. Speaking of which - surprisingly given that they do have Symbian experience (tho they made a bit of a hash) SE seem to be having problems getting SF^x sorted for them - I am hearing reports of early minor problems with the Vivaz (I really hope not) though not on the scale of the problem with the Satio. One of the problems for SE at the moment is that they are really resource and funding stretched I believe and trying to support 3 OS for their smartphones which explains why the Satio has only had two firmware updates that don't fully address it's stability issues seemingly (an area where SE already have a very poor track record indeed) and therefore cannot be fully confidant of their continuing support for Symbaian devices. SE also have a very weak download store and app ugrades compared to Nokia or even "fun app" internal development.

So really I think the Vivaz and the N97mini are better phones but having been really severely let down by my horrible N97experience it would take a lot of convincing for me to go near Nokia or Symbian again and I waited for 4 years after my W800 for SE to bring out a decent new smartphone and they never did. In theory you're getting a hell of a lot of phone with the N97/mini or the Satio/Vivaz but they're deeply flawed if you can try before you buy I'd strongly suggest you do. If I had to without having touched a Vivaz I guess I'd plump for the N97mini but I'd really hate myself.

Or wait for new Android (SE X10 or the X10 minis) or as I said earlier the HTC Legend (looks nice) or if you can live with the walled garden the current iPhone or its future sibling - it is bombproof and does just "work" if you want a phone you can forget about but I guess as you have a N82 the cam is important to you (though I'm always really impressed by the quality of the iPhone 3GS's pics for a 3.2mp).

Good luck guess I've confused you more.

Well said snoflake

Most Nokia phones does have the ram shortage problems and i really dislike the design of the Vivaz.

If you Must choose between the two mention phones N97 and Satio then you probably end up N97 since N97 edge out battery life compare to Satio and free Map turn by turn by Nokia (yet you can install maps on Satio too with hack helloOX and Nokia map is not the best map out there)

Im happy with my Satio since i like its design & camera also i can install pretty much all the apps from Nokia with a simple hack. Satio is equipped with a faster proccessor and delicated gpu for 3D graphic not to mention double the RAM of the N97

Hope i dont cause more confuse to you than it's already was

Cheers,
zide

Satio all the way.

N97 is ugly, slow and boring.

I'd go for the satio. I am very pleased of my satio and i do not use my camera VERY much. But it does not collect dust! anyway i think the only good thing the n97 has is the huge huge internal memory but after all i hate symbian and nokia. nokia itself has admitted the n97 was a failure:

as for what bonovox said about the battery, my satio lives 3-4 days with 3G, music and over 3-4 hours of conversation a day. Oh yeah, lots of games too And it's faster too...

Id still go for the satio but being a SE the satio lacks apps which are nokia only unless hacked. Dont let ram issues put you off buying a N series since after a firmware update or two usually nokia sort such issues out which they have with the n97. Maybe you should consider the n97 mini ?

Satio better camera, faster, better touch screen.
N97 is ugly, slow and has too many bugs, and the screen is cr*p.
