A few questions on the T300 |

Hello,
I had done0 some research on the Sony Ericsson T300 and the Nokia 3530 (3510i in US and Europe). Both phones seem to have similar functions and are available at a reasonable cost. For a school-going student like me, they are my preferred options. But I am totally confused over to get the T300 or the 3530 (3510i). Here are some questions:
1) T300 has 256 colors and 3530 has 4096 colors. Does this affect the performance of the display in a big way or it's not that noticable?
2) Nokia 3530 is Java compatible. Which means you can download Games, Software and other stuff. I heard that T300 has the Mophune Game Engine. Ok, so you can download games. But what about other software? can you download and use other software like the 3530?
3) How much do I have to pay for the data cable as I am not having an IR port on my PC and I cannot afford to download over WAP.
4) My mom has the Ericsson T68. I was very disappointed with that phone as it has many bugs, plus it's GUI is very heavy, hence, very slow. The response time is higher than Nokia phones. What about the T300. Also, the stick is very delicate in the T68. What about the T300?
5) Do Nokia ringtones, picture messages, and screensavers work in the T300? If not, is there any software through which I can convert them to Sony Ericsson format?
6) I also heard that the polyphonic speaker of the T300 does not produce a loud output. Hence, polyphonic ringtones are not heard in noisy places. Is that true? Is there any solution to it?
7) Also, can the Sony Ericsson Operating System be updated to fix bugs?
Thanks,
rpn.

Hi all,
sorry, accidently hit enter & posted without writing anything the last time.
Some answers follow:
1) T300 has 256 colors and 3530 has 4096 colors. Does this affect the performance of the display in a big way or it's not that noticable?
It seems to vary. Some say the 4096 is much better, but many people are disappointed with the Nokia screen, saying it is hard to see.
I can say the screen on the T300 is good, but I have not been able to compare it to the Nokia 3530i.
2) Nokia 3530 is Java compatible. Which means you can download Games, Software and other stuff. I heard that T300 has the Mophune Game Engine. Ok, so you can download games. But what about other software? can you download and use other software like the 3530?
Like what ? I am not really aware of any "Java apps" out there for the 3530i other than games. For games, from an end users point of view there really is no big difference between the Mophune engine and Java.
3) How much do I have to pay for the data cable as I am not having an IR port on my PC and I cannot afford to download over WAP.
Can't comment on the 3530i, but a USB or serial data cable costs approx. 35 to 40 Euros for T300.
4) My mom has the Ericsson T68. I was very disappointed with that phone as it has many bugs, plus it's GUI is very heavy, hence, very slow. The response time is higher than Nokia phones. What about the T300. Also, the stick is very delicate in the T68. What about the T300?
Your Mom should take the T68 into a service center and get the firmware updated. There were a number of bugs in the early versions of the T68. The T300 has reportadly has some bugs, but I have never had any problems.
5) Do Nokia ringtones, picture messages, and screensavers work in the T300? If not, is there any software through which I can convert them to Sony Ericsson format?
Nokia ringtones and picture messages are supposed to work on the T300, but honestly I have not tried it and cannot confirm if this is correct.
6) I also heard that the polyphonic speaker of the T300 does not produce a loud output. Hence, polyphonic ringtones are not heard in noisy places. Is that true? Is there any solution to it?
I have not had a problem, but others on Easto have complained. This is very subjective, it depends on the ringtone, it depends on the environment and it depends on the individual.
7) Also, can the Sony Ericsson Operating System be updated to fix bugs?
Yes. But you must go to an authorised service center to get the update. Where ever you buy oyur phone usually can also update it. Otherwise check the web for the nearest place.
Hope this helps,

you are seeking counsel in the wrong place. Of course our answer will be loud and clear: T300. After all this is the SE forum.
no, but jokes apart, the 300 is a better deal. especially if gotten with the mca 25. it costs about 300$, while the 3510i is 300$ only the handset. so go for t300

Had the same dilemma b4 i bought my T300, was looking for a 2nd phone to my T68i. The T300 and 3530 crossed my mind, the reason behind why i chose the T300 over the 3530 is stated below
1. most importantly is connectivity, though without bluetooth, the T300 still has an IR port to connect to various devices, especially to my palm. Trust me..with the IR connectivity, it saves bucks. No need to buy a datacable..just go out and borrow or use ur parent's/friend's (
sure laptop these days hav IRDA on em) and go ahead, beam everything to the T300 wthout any addictional cost, rather than buying a data cable for your T300/3530. Also, i use my Palm rather heavily, therefore an IR on my mobile is a definite must.
2. MMS and MCA-25, yes MMS......u take ur pics and send a MMS instantly to other mobile...but in the case of a 3530..although it fully supports MMS, but missing out any direct pic input method seems to cripple the MMS feature...only way to send an MMS is to download a pic from wap( why the hell do u wan to send pics downloaded from WAP) or take a pic with ur digicam, upload it into the PC/laptop and use a datacable to transfer it to the 3530 when u can just use the MCA-25,snap a picture and send directly as MMS
3. The interface...if u have tried the menu in ur mom's T68, u will notice that icons lay neatly in the menu, all 9 of em, being visible in one glance rather than the Nokia menu system, which did not fully utilised its 4,096 colour. If u have a 4,096 colour mobile, why not show as many icons as possible in a screen rather than just a whole screen showing up a large icon for a particular function.
4.Memory capacity...i managed to free up around 875kb after a major master reset on my T300, the capacity is massive if compared to the 3530...even the higher end nokia 6100 seems to hav around 400kb shared memory
5. The 3530 size is bigger and heavier than the T300, although both are considered bulky phones, i will choose the smaller 1
Cons:
1. Although the firmware can be upgraded, generally the menu response is slower than any of Nokia phones, so if u are an sms freak, u will be annoyed at times of keying in the words
2. 256 vs 4,096 colour, but for me both screens is not good for looking at pics, might be due to the STN screen. Comparing the 4,096 screens between 3530 and the old samsung T100, i would say the 3530 does not even live up to the numerics 4,096.
3. Alert tones, generally the polyphonic in T300 is soft, but the normal .emy / .imy is as loud as the Nokia's. Also still no personalisation of sms tones
4. In my place the T300 + MCA-25 cost app USD310, T300 alone around USD220 while the 3530 cost only around USD175
hope this helps |

Keep in mind that the Nokia (altough it has 4096 colours), have a lower screen resolution, and according to some people who has tested it, the T300 actually has a better screen.
When it comes to downloadable games, the Mophun games are very good, and much better than the Java games I've seen. The Mophun games are very fast and look real nice. So I would prefer Mophun over Java. Applications could also be developed for Mophun, not that I know of any though.
The joystick of the T300 is actually better than the T68 joystick, even though it is smaller.
The T68/T300 menu system is much better than the old Nokia system IMHO. Much easier to navigate, and gives a better overview of the options available.
Another fact to consider is that SonyEricsson's MMS implementation is much better than the Nokia's. You can make almost like a powerpoint presentation on SonyEricsson with multiple timed slides and timed objects/text. Which makes it far superior.
The T300 also has much better Polyphonic ringtones (24 channels). Actually it has the best ringtones I've heard from any mobile phone so far.
The T300 software is fast, no lagging.
The IR-port is also very nice to have. And another plus point for the T300 is the SonyEricsson system connector (at the bottom of the phone), with lots of accessories available. MP3-player, Radio, Light Torch, Laser Pointer, etc.
Another thing, although very personal, is that the T300 looks much better than the old Nokia 3xxx design.
Another great thing is that you can customise every little detail in the menus by making your own themes. With you own themes you can choose your own colours for menu items, text, pop-up windows, backgrounds. Every menuitem has a colour setting which is easily editable. This requires a computer and an IR/Datacable of course. Some themes can be downloaded from different wap-pages, though.
Of course this is written by a person who really likes SonyEricsson phones, but I can't find one single reason choose the Nokia 3510i instead of a SonyEricsson T300.

The site imobile.com.au write this about the 3530/3510I screen:
"A little issue I had with the lower resolution screen was its inability to clearly display a photo or high-definition graphics. It’s quite alright to display simple graphics (like those graphics used for each menu) - but when you try and display a photo-quality image received as an MMS, you will immediately notice this. It is definitely better than the 256-colour screens found on both the Sony Ericsson T300 and T68i, which display photos with even lower clarity. "

yes, no doubt the screen in T68i and T300 is of inferior quality than the 3530/3510i |

Wow!
Thank you everybody for your fast and generous response.
I still have a few more questions:
So, we can't upgrade the firmware of the T300 at home using
IR or Datacable? Because, in India, there are a few service centres
of SonyEricsson as compared to a large number of service centres of
Nokia.

Mike, fyi, check out www.planete-nokia.com (The site is in french,
so if you don't know french you would have to translate it using
google.com's language tools.) Here, you'll find the Java apps that
I am talking about.
Also, can apps be developed on the mophune engine or only games?
Nice to hear that SonyEricsson has resolved all bugs that were there
on the T68 like slow software, sensitive joystick, etc. Now I am
convinced that I can surely go for the T300 without any hesitation
or regret. Also, i think i have a solution for the low polyphonic
ringtones. All polyphonic ringtones are in MIDI format. right? So,
if we find any software that let's us increase the master volume of
the MIDI, we will surely get a better performance once the MIDI's are
loaded on the phone.
I also came to know that the Nokia 3530 has a 96x65 pixel screen whereas
the T300 has a 101x89 pixel screen. this shows that even though the
T300 may be small in size, it does have a slightly bigger screen than
the 3530. I have another reason to get the T300, it's none other than
the Communicam. Hence, my mobile phone will also act as a digital
camera which I can extensively use. Another pro i couldn't have in
The 3530.
A last question, do you know sites from where i can get the T300 themes,
mophune games, etc etc......
Sorry for bugging you people a lot. Hope that when I get the T300,
I also become a proud member of the esato forums! |
