Hi all,

I know this trick might be of marginal value, and it might have been posted here before as well. But I have started using it quite much since I discovered it, and I thought it could be nice to share it.

When writing an SMS, you sometimes want to write a colon (:) for instance. You can do this by pressing # followed by 0 (or joy-down) seven times, which takes a long time. You can also do this by pressing Option, Yes, joy-right five times and then Yes (or joy-in), which amounts to the same number of key-presses. However, there is a third way:

Press

Option 1 5

That takes you to the fifth character in the symbol list, which is the colon. Likewise, you can push

Option 1 9

to enter a quoting mark "

Option 1 3

to ender an exclamation mark ! etc.

I hope you find this trick useful.

-Jas

PS: the "option" key is the one between the "yes" key and the "1" key, if you wondered.

A related trick: If you are in the \"symbol\"-list, you can press 0 to toggle between the upper and the lower half of the list.

I guess we all suffer from the slowness of our beloved t68. What tricks do you use for faster usage? I use the following: (many of these have been reported elsewhere) 1) I have groups for my 5 closest friends. In each group there is only one number. Then, when sending an SMS, I just type left-2-1 for my first friend, left-2-3 for my third etc. This is much faster than using the phonebook. 2) I remove all SIM SMS:es (cont.)

3) I put my most frequently dialed numbers on SIM position 1-5 for fast dialing with 1-#-yes, 2-#-yes etc. 4) I put TA in front of the most used contact on letter t (Thomas becomes TA Thomas for instance) for easy access. Rarely used contacts are put in brackets ( ) so those contacts end up last in the alphabet, not disturbing the other contacts.

@mkt: Well it sure took a while to enter it, but I was on a 4 h long train trip and didn't have much else to do... Plus I kind of hoped somebody would chip in and contribute with a speed up trick I hadn't heard of or thought of.

Jas, thanks and keep on experimenting in finding ways to speed up the sms. Right now this is as good as it gets but I wished there still would be a faster way for typing a period (.) instead of the option-1-1

What other short cuts have you found on the phone besides smsings..that are new of course!

@stlblues:

Well, if you are in T9 mode you can always press # to enter a period (.). I guess that you were talking about the multitap mode, though, and then option-1-1 is actually faster.

I tried this on a T600, and it does not work in exactly the same way.

Nevertheless I found out that using the number keys you can speed up a lot after some training:

option key - 1 or yes - navigate with 2/4/6/8 and select with 5. Example: to enter a line break, one would have to key in option 1265.

Not all that speedy, but at least you can remember the key-sequences for the most used symbols. It reminds me of the good old DOS-days where you would have to key in alt and some digits to enter symbols in most word processors or where you navigated with the arrow keys holding shift (or not) before the 'extended keyboards' were made.

I know, I'm old.

The volume slider also helps to go down one line, but usually I do not have my fingers in the right positipon for that, so the number-keys are more efficient for my kind of use.

Cheers

Hi,

I tried to do the same trick on my sisters T65, but it didn't work too well since you can't press option-1 in order to go to the symbols menu --- the shortcut keys 1, 2 3 etc does not work in the option menu.

well about the LAG issue...i think T68 is fast, the only problem is when you key in a letter it will firtst appear on top right accurately. i have a post that wishing for the next update that will eliminate that pop-out at the top and send the letter straight below.
