After many years of using my phone as my music player I have decided to switch to a MP3 player, W800i was my first phone for listening to music and since then have had numerous walkman phones (W580, w850 etc) and now I'm using a Satio. I find my phone good for music but not great, my main issue is the sound quality, the sound quality is no where near as good as one of the top of the range sony walkmans. Another issue is battery life as we all know the battery life is terrible on the satio so that doesn't help, and phones in general don't last as long as MP3 players.

So I have decided to purchase a top of the range sony walkman or possibly an Ipod touch, can't really decide.

Question is do you think mobile phones are competitive enough as MP3 players?

And would you go back to your MP3 player?

nope. don't want to bring any additional clutter. my T700 serves as my music player as well. i've likewise invested on a 4Gb M2 and a philips shb9000 stereo bluetooth headset. sound quality is superb on this headset.

Yes. I already use my Creative Zen player for all my music. Decided not long ago that most mobiles dont cut it for quality plus i dont like draining my battery too much. I prefer to use my phone for calls texts internet and camera. I am finding alot of mobiles getting worse for sound.
Phone?? What phone??

the choice is easy, Sony! The sound quality has is, and always has been, better than the ipods, and better then MOST other brands out their too. Battery life on Sony's are fantastic too, especially on the new models. The old ones were very good too. No im not biased, its just pure facts

My W995 sounds better than the iPod and I do believe it's better than most of the mid and entry level dedicated players out there eventhough it won't be able to compete with the best ie. Sony X-series etc. I won't sacrifice the convenience of a convergience device for quality that's just a tad more and wouldn't even matter to many.

I wouldnt bother to buy any extra mp3 player as i am satisfied with my K850i and bluetooth handsfree DS980. It may be possible other players may sound better but i wouldnt buy any extra gadget to hang around my neck. Mostly I am listening to music while driving my bike. If i buy extra player, there would be two headphones around my neck. And imagine when phone rings while listening to music while driving, it would be difficult to swap the headphones and i might miss the call or to worse i might meet with an accident. Why buy two gadgets when one is most enough. For that it is okay to compromise little with sound quality.

Im very happy with my Nokia 5800XM and in-ear Sennheiser CX300s, sounds better than most phones and mid-range mp3players. . I play music for about 2hours a day, thats when im studying and going through my notes, and by the time i go to bed its still got 2-3bars of battery left so im not concerned about batt life.

i have a seperate MP3 player to my phone as the sound quality cannot be surpassed by any phone at the moment. Teamed up with my WESC Maraccas headphones and I would never go back to my phone for music.

I think Mobiles sound good on Headphones but however it's the battery problem,
many new phones today bearley last considering the many other features we use on them.

I think having your Mobile there as a mobile makes sence and having a Mp3 player for music,
is a better way

I don't think battery life is a problem at all. I have my usb cable in the office so I plug it in all the time where I can use it for web surfing, syncing and music (this is where my 3.5mm jack comes really handy) while it gets charged, and I have a car charger where I can plug it in as well when I'm on the go, works really well with the GPS too, no worries about the battery getting drained. I think we can all have the battery issue well covered this way.

Well I splashed the cash on an X series Walkman.

Went into local Argos and there were 10 of them on show in the box so I couldn't resist and bought the 16GB version for 170, I kind of wish I got a Ipod touch but I'm happy with the walkman.

Edit: And it is better than any music phone from SE, the sound quality is far better. The screen is really good (oled) especially compared to my satio, the colous look washed out compared to my walkman.

Well, no one's gonna argue with you that the X-series is a better player than any SE Walkman phone. It's the best sounding portable player in the market. Period. Which makes me wonder why on earth would you even wish you got an iPod in the first place, Sony audio on the X-series is obviously light years ahead
