Hey,

Here in the US, most GSM networks are installing EDGE later this year. It's a sort of GPRS upgrade that gives higher speeds. As far as I know, European networks are skipping it going from GPRS str8 to WCDMA.

As far as I know, only Nokia has announced an EDGE phone (the 6610 or 6100 or something like that, who can tell them apart anyway?). The technical details of the P800 say it supports GPRS (4+1, upto 85,6 kbps + 21,4 kbps in networks supporting CS-4 coding scheme)

85.6 kbps is a lot more than I get with my T68i on my GPRS network (T-Mobile USA) right now.

Does anyone know if we will be able to get the 85 kpbs speed once T-mobile switches to EDGE?

Thanks,

Sven

For GPRS CS1 to CS4 is used
CS1=8.0 kbps
CS2=12.0 kbps
CS3=14.4 kbps
CS4=21.4 kbps

Support of 4+1 means you can use up to 4 Timeslots,TS downlink and 1 TS uplink in a GSM frame. For speach you only use one TS and the other ones are used by other users. Most operators are supporting either CS2 or CS3 in their network and will also limit the timeslot you can use to maybe 1,2 or 3, this will give you the available speed today, roughly between 12kbps and 40 kbps. For EDGE there are completely new codeing schemes calles MCS1 to MCS9 using 8PSK modulation where GPRS use GMSK modulation. The quick answer to your question is: You cannot use P800 to reach EDGE speed, however an EDGE network supports, of couse, GPRS and GSM as well. Nothing is taken away, just added. Nokia has commited to AWS and Cingular to ship mobile this year. Sony ericsson will show something later, I guess, maybe at the end of the year as well.
