Hi,

Has anyone else noticed this?, I've tried various music (encoded at different rates which sound fantastic on other audio equipment) and different headphones (via both sockets on the phone). My mate who is in a band and heavily into audiophile stuff agrees that the sound quality is terrible. My old w810i is far better

The top end is to harsh but without any definition and whenever I use one of the EQ settings the music seems to get muddied up and even slightly louder and quieter in sections.

I am wondering if this either a bad phone or something to do with the firmware that O2 (UK) uses (I know they alter it as google maps and wayfinder aren't installed)

I have used the update service which states I am running the latest firmware. The phone is going back but if the next one is the same then I may have to move phones

Cheers guys

w995 stock acoustic driver is one of the best if not the best among all the phones out there and this can further be enhanced with a modded driver. i'm not sure what need to be rectified but it seems that the whole acoustic module need to be looked into, and in this case i would suggest a replacement

6 month ago when I bought my W995 I also wrote here that my old W800i was and is far better.
most of the people here did not like it (maybe cos they never had a W800/810.)

Can't say for sure if it's actually a firmware issue, one's sonic evaluation is very subjective from what I gather. For instance pt020 thinks his W800 sounds better while I on the contrary feel that it sounds better than my W800. I guess there are factors that influence one's judgement such as genre, headset, preference and a host of other variables. But as a benchmark i'd say my W995 sounds better than an iPod for sure. I could be biased as I am an SE fanboy at heart, but even then I doubt it would be terribly different from the next person's assessment. Tip: Try tinkering with the manual equalizer, I've never used the preset ones as they are far from my taste. My current favourite is this if you'd like to try it once you get your replacement

i agreed with mode...
other factor that will influence the quality of sound production is the source file format...mp3, wma, ogg vorbis, wav, flac will not produce the same quality and thus adjustment need to be made with the equaliser...
my equalizer setting for mp3 rock music ( LAME 3.98 encoder, vbr 256 Kbit/s, sample rate 44100hz, 2 audio channels) is as follows:

We already talked about it and we disagree... legal.
I also think that the EQ of the W995i (six steps) is useless compare to the EQ of the W800 (16 steps)
and I use it in this settings what are different then yours,I have very good headphones from Bose and they give all the player can give, wish I could meet you and let you listen, you will change your mind in one second. With the W800i they move my ears ... no other phone moves my ears with the bass like the W800i dose
I work with 2200 people ...we even have an iphone section and we sit and compare there our phones ... and they all hate my W800i cos it sounds better then all the phones I tried in the last 5 years.
my settings

PS
here few pictures from friends at work comparing their iphones to my W800i... and first thing they say is that the headphones are very good and thats why it sounds so good... so then I tell them that they come with a cable that fits the iphone too so they can try my headphones with their iphone... and then you have to see their faces, they do not smile

2 more iphone owners can not believe their ears

cheers guys - I did try different eq settings as well as the built in ones and I certainly will try the ones suggested.

As said I did get soemone else to listen to my phone who is well into good audio and is in a band. I did it kind of double blind - I didn't mention that I thought there was something wrong with it, just told him it was the new top end walkman phone and would he like a listen. He volunteered that he thought the sound was poor. Not scientific I know but for one of your workmates to say this about a brand new phone is pretty convincing to me.

He had some shure headphones and tried it with different qaulity mp3 and aac tracks etc. and came to the same conclusion. I was using the supplied sony ones (as I have done with prev phones)

pt020 - I didn't realize the w800 walkman was so well thought of - perhaps that my downfall - I had both the w800 and then w810 phones and so was expecting this one to sound better..which it my opinion it falls well below.

I also love sony stuff - my home cinema is all sony etc, so I really do want this phone to be the muts nuts. I see what the swap brings and let you know then. btw I think the rest of the phone features are ace.

I found the w995 had a solid sound although with certain music on various settings it does become a bit woolly with the sound. I once had that problem with the rubbish w910 whereby the sound would fade in and out and was very tinny. Worst phone they ever made the w910 imo
