With its time I don't think its slow in general, but yes if you compare it to mobiles releasing these days than you will find it slow. I also use P1i and i don't think it is slow. Yes it lags in SMS when the number of sms in your list goes higher than 500.

The title really cracked me up! The P1 is an old horse, about 3 years old. That processor is too underpowered to for the phone to be fast so you'll either have to live with it or get something faster. I actually got a Blackberry 9700 recently which is reasonably fast but it's back in its box cause it is not the P1. The home screen of the P1 makes up for its slowness in that it is practically a shortcut to everything. Couple that with the touchscreen functionality you have a decent phone even today.

By the way, the last firmware was/is R9K009 but don't expect miracles in its performance.

It's not what you do or even how you do it but in what state of mind you do it: Dups! 2009

You can try fireware update, I really don't remember the changes I felt back when I updated my P1 but yes I noticed the jog dial screwed up ever since. Camera was fast. Also you might want to check if you close all the running application from time to time after use. It is possible that all the applications you have been working are still running in background and eating battery and power.
