Should Motorola And Sony Ericsson Merge?
The idea: in view of Motorola’s and Sony Ericsson’s low global handset market share - less than 5% each - shouldn’t they merge? The geographies work: Sony Ericsson has a decent market share in Europe (12.4%), Motorola has a good share of the U.S. (17.3%), Sony Ericsson does OK in India (10%), while Motorola is fine in China (10%).
There would naturally be cost savings from merging R&D and marketing functions. Currently, Sony Ericsson will spend around 15% of revenue on R&D and 13% of revenue on SG&A, and it’s estimated that Motorola spends around 33% of revenue on operating costs for devices.
..................
The upshot is that while Motorola has its Droid, and it’s likely Sony Ericsson will soon have Android phones as well, they will be competing against a raft of new handsets all of which will be utilizing the same operating system.
..................All this suggests that next year when Android really gets into its stride, there will clearly need to be consolidation between manufacturers of mobile handsets.

That would be interesting & perhaps sensible I don't know. Motorola seem to have returned with a bang with some good phones & one sold out after 3 hours so I read But what would you call them? MotoEricsson? Would it end with Sony going their seperate way?

If you want the Ericsson part of SE burning to the ground in a steaming pile of moto-ugly then sure! SE is part Sony as well and no matter how hard they crash they won't partner with anyone until the Sony part goes away. |

Merge doesn't sound to bad to me.
They should make the same phones but sell them in different countries with different brands. Like in Goldenface's marketshare figures. It's already done in the car-industry.

Sounds pretty weird to me, a joint venture merging with another company. The better thing would be to have Moto gone and SE buy their old employees, so that they get a bit more innovative. I think one of the two will be gone in a couple of years anyway. (and I don't want it to be )

Unfortunately you appear to know nothing of Sony phones
the Z5 and Z7 were great for their style, jog dial (before anyone else), 3d menu systems etc... the mz5 added memory stick support which was unheard of previously in any phone, the J series allowed recording of your own ringtones.
In general, Sony phones were generally stylish and innovative whereas Ericsson phones did have good technology within but were generally blocks without style until just before their pre-Sony days (T65,T66,T68)
I can see the logic behind the idea of a Moto merger with SE but I don't take the idea seriously as I think it would diminish their overall market share rather than consilidate it or increase it.

It would be a very sad thing, to see Motorola disappear (and I hope they won't), this company manufactured all kinds of mobile communication devices and they were also among the first to produce mobile phones, costing a small fortune and more then a kilo in weight, but they were mobile .

Ha hahahahaha
I always said Moto would bounce back and they have, they're having a renaissance. But Sony won't let go of Sony Ericsson, I'll bet my last cent on that!
I've had better Sony phones than Ericsson ones in the past but that's just me. As for merging? It'll never, ever happen but it sounds interesting.
Moto will return in 2010, massively, that's my prediction.

each mobile phone manufacturer has its own strength...
IN GENERAL merging of companies are not good for the consumers, they will be left with no choice but to accept whatever the merged companies produce, it meant less competition, sub standard product quality, poor after sales service and limited alternative product that the consumer has to deal with...
less companies less competition good for them, more companies more competition good for the consumers
