Well i have spoken direct with Sony Ericsson and they have assured me that there are no updates planned to add any features other than to possibly add the ability to edit the satio dictionary. They also said that smilies and EQ would not be added by Sony Ericsson at anytime and that the only way the Satio would get those features if is a 3rd party app was made.

I certainly do not disregard what PawCat is saying here. But if SE wants the phone to make its presence in the market as a flagship product (I do not know if SE's priorities of flagship product has now shifted to X10 !!) then definitely the phone needs not just one couple of FW updates.

Going by standard SE practises, all SE phones are updated at least 5-6 times before they reach their 'stable state'. I would expect no difference in this case given the point this is first Symbian venture for SE.

If you look into the history of FWs release by SE for C902 and C905 and K800 (first Cybershot phone) this trend will be very much apparent.

The equalizer was something that was always present on all S60 phones and for some stupid reason SE decided to remove it so they will never add it again (They never liked to admit their mistakes)
I will keep my n85 just to ear music because the sound is far better and one very important thing.. i can select a song much more faster than on satio for exemple with more than 1000songs i take with satio about 100 x more time to reach a song that starts with a Z.
About the camara ... they really need to improve it because again even my n85 can take pictures of that quality with no flash and the same light conditions.

I hope they do add more features like EQ and smilies and sort the camera out and like dipb says if SE want to make a mark with this flagship they need to add the important features and not remove them.

My other concern is that the S60 5th edition is now a defunct code. Is anyone still developing for it or are they now moring forward with Nokia to the newer versions. In general since the latest firmware i'm very happy with my Satio but so far it has fallen short of the hype and potential promised.

I tried to stress to my contact at Sony Ericsson the importance of the above features but rather felt that SE was already moving on to other things and was leaving the Satio in the hands of 3rd party developers....I really hope i am wrong...

Hope we all are wrong that SE will leave the "entertainment unlimited" phone and move forward.. In the 12m camera market, the only other competitor is Samsung Pixon (if I am not wrong). Comparison by various phone sites, showed that the Pixon is no far behind. Satio only beats Pixon by margin .. (or not).

@PawCat : I do not know about your contact in SE, but if SE is to be believed, then the latest firmware would not have hit the market before Christmas or new year. Surprisingly, it came quick. So being hopeful

I am being very optimistic here, that SE releases couple of important FWs and bring up the phone to the hype it created after MWC 2009 in Barcelona.

Yes at the time my contact had said to me it would be released to Vodafone branded Satios about now, so when it appeared about 2 weeks earlier than he had said i asked why. In fact SE had completed the firmware update some time ago but Vodafone had to then add their bits and approve it for release to their phones. So the 2 week window was a safety zone to allow VF do what it needed to do. Vodafone totally refused to say anything re a release date and completely denied any such update existed so made themselves look most stupid when it was actually released.

But i also saw some people being told after xmas so it can be confusing.

I am in total agreement though with what you are saying and like you i am hoping......

I have asked my SE contact if they can confirm anything re the Camera and also Facebook app which has been released on the SE shop. It works ( except T9 does not ) but it still is not the same app that the Satio is advertised as having.

At the X10 launch, Sony Ericsson admitted they've been bad at supporting and updating devices. In 2010, they intend to be far more pro-active on updates. Still, these are just words and we will need to wait and see the actions!

Sadly, the Satio is not included in this new strategy to update/enhance via firmware - so besides the bug fixes and a few tweaks, I doubt we'll see anything new for it. I am not sure if the second S60v5 handset to be released in early 2010 will be part of this new strategy - but that's really just a smaller Satio with HD video capture (and an inferior camera and flash).

The X10 and future models will (possibly) be more like the iPhone in that there will be major updates that introduce entirely new features - similar to what Nokia did with its '2.0 update'. I guess you can thank Apple for that idea, even though Sony Ericsson has added new features before (just never made such a big deal about it - the C905 perhaps being one of the exceptions).

I'm sad to say that I agree with this. Apart from fixes of major and hopefully also some minor bugs, I don't believe that we can expect any revolutionary changes of the firmware we have got. That is, no equalizer, no RDS, etc.

I believe that in future models, the software delivered with the phone will be even more basic, but with a purchase upgrade option for every extra feature that the user wants. We have seen it already in the Satio: The Office bundle, the Acrobat Reader and WisePilot came with a limited time demo license, and it's up to the owner to purchase a permanent license or a yearly subscription, if the applications are needed.
I can imagine a possibility to purchase and download a more advanced media player with an equalizer and more advanced search functions or a more advanced radio with RDS functionality for those who want it and are willing to pay for it. For the web browser, there are several alternate browsers already, Opera Mobile and Opera Mini are two of them. In one way, this may be a good thing, because the users can customize their units for their own needs, but on the other hand, it's bad, since one might think that things should be there from start, having paid a fortune for the unit. It's like what's included in the price of a car: It's natural that the wheels and the steering wheel and the seats are included, but maybe not the advanced stereo or the air conditioning system.

I haven't yet decided if it's good or bad.

One point disturbs me a lot..

Before Satio came, we saw lot of media activity and communication by SE about as the phone and its first Symbian phone and so was its focus.
With Sation X2 was also there on the market...
Suddenly SE shifted the focus on X10 and Android..

I am wondering, the admitals about neglecting enhancements & firmware updates, shifting focus from one phone to another and many other such behaviour.. is it not highlighting that something is going on behind the scene which SE is not very much open about.

I wont be surprised, if SE shifts the focus from X10 after its launch to some other model in development.. who knows, they might launch something on Apple platform !!!

SE has at least one more S60 device coming soon, so it's not all Android (or WinMo) just yet.

i hope that will release further updates together with the kurara release... same as with the c905 which got the SmileShutter update when the C510(?!) with smileshutter was released. So I'm still looking foward to EQ, RDS & (maybe even) HD-Vids...

there also were phones like K800i and K850i that shared the same firmware updates

I believe it would be a good thing if all cellphone manufacturers could unite and agree upon one common operating system platform, no matter wether that would be Symbian, Android or even windows Mobile (Or Mac OS or Linux for that matter). The benefits would be enormous, with a shared selection of software.
