I've recently sold something on ebay and received the payment via paypal from the winning bidder but paypal is telling me that i can't have access to the money for 21 days providing the buyer hasn't reported any problems.

Now i've sold plenty of things on ebay but have never had any payments held for 21 days the question is this normal and safe? what if i send the item to the buyer and buyer reports a problem and my money is withheld or retracted where do i stand on this as this has never happened to me before and why i should i have to wait for 21 days for my payment to clear when item has already been paid for and item sent?

So what is the best course of action here?

I've never had a problem with paypal myself but I have read that this is becoming more and more of a problem lately

fortunately i have a 100+ verified paypal account (and 1200+ 100% ebay status) and so don't have these issues but if I did I don't think I'd be honouring any deal when I would be assumed by the payment system to be not honourable. Such status should be pre-determined before you use their facilities, not after you have already comitted to their services

I've been 100% happy with paypal and ebay so far but these are the kinds of stories we read about that really make me realise the power these companies have over us when we are totally honourable, though I'm sure there are many who are not, but their criteria for deciding does seem flawed

The system is flawed alright now i'm stuck and don't know if i should post the item back to the buyer or just cancel the sale and refund the money back? as i have no guarantees that even after 21 days i will i have my money and i don't think i really want to wait 21 days for money that is supposed to be mine anyway.

Happened to me a few years back, basically the buyer e-mailed paypal att the same time he made the payment. Telling PP that he was suspicious of me as a seller

In my case it was a plan from the buyer the whole time. I sent the goods, and lo and behold, within the 21 days the transaction was reversed, the buyer claimes to never have recieved the goods. I have the proof of delivery, but PayPal just sad FU, you aint getting anything back.

Not a big fan of paypal.

So my suspicion was right then thanks for telling me this i will now contact the buyer to either release the payment now if he wants the item he purchased or i will cancel the sale altogether and reverse his payment back to him.

From Paypals website:
eBay item holds - we may place a hold on a payment received for an eBay transaction when we believe there is a high level of risk that the transaction will be disputed or charged back. We may hold the funds for up to 21 days but may also release the hold sooner if the buyer leaves positive feedback on eBay or we can confirm satisfactory delivery of the item.


It may not be the buyers fault but because of the item that you sold. I havent had this happen to me yet but a friend has and didnt have any problems, as soon as the buyer left positive feedback Paypal released the funds. You should be ok if you send the item recorded delivery or Special Delivery.

It is the buyers fault as there is nothing wrong with the item that i've sold and how would the buyer know if this anyway since i haven't even sent it to him yet? That didn't help me, i sent it with recorded delivery, and the postal services confirmed it was delivered and sent me a copy of the proof of delivery. PP couldn't care less when i sent it on to them.

I've been trying to call paypal and all i've been getting is a automated advice line running me through endless options

Has the buyer reported you then? They dont have to do anything, Ebay/ Paypal could have decided to hold it. I have never seen an option when paying for an item with paypal to withhold payment.

No he hasn't reported me the issue is just over the payment withheld for 21 days nothing else i've seen tried to resolve the matter with your but he isn't replying to my messages which indicates that he didn't have any intention of clearing my payment

Agreed, that PayPal has shit customer service. To get to a person, call 020 8605 3000 (London) and press option 1 (so it's free) then just go through the menu's
