Is windows firewall good enough?
I was using the free version of Zone Alarm, but it was conflicting with my pc, and not allowing me to connect to the internet.

What OS are you on?
With XP, look no further than Kerio. It's free, has a bi-directional firewall (the XP firewall is uni-directional) and has a tiny 3-4MB footprint. The company that made Kerio folded a couple of years ago but the software is still available via web sites like this one.
If you're using Vista or 7, the Windows firewall is good enough. If you need HIPS protection, check out Online Armor free which is currently the most secure firewall available. Comodo is another alternative but they've been involved in some unethical stuff over the years. Kaspersky 2010 is a good option if you want an all in one solution combining the antivirus & firewalls.

I am using XP. The strange thing is, I have had zone alarm installed for years, and now it has just thrown a funny.
