WCDMA the 3G standard. http://www.ericsson.com/technology/WCDMA.shtml

When will this new technology be available? This will probably take a while...

but

Nokia has already announced a triband GSM900/GSM1800/WCDMA phone. The 6650.

What about ?

Actually 6650 is dualband (900/1800) and dualmode (WCDMA/GSM).

GSM providers around the world are rolling out the WCDMA as we speak. Most countries in Europe will have their networks running by the end of this year (2003) but will probably not function properly until year 2004.

...not to mention the insane costs in some European countries - :coughgermanycough: - which the network providers will drain from the customers. Some of the network providers paid 16 billion Euros (I think) for a 3G/UMTS license. Crazy I tell ya!
