This is my fastest download speed to date with my as W995 as a USB modem. It has gone up to over 500KB/Sec before but with inconsistent fluctuations. This one though was consistent

Same here with C905,k850 and C902(500kbps max~min 170kbps)

For actual transfer rate the best I've seen is 170kb/sec
I was going to download an iTunes update the other day (99MB) but the 7hr expected download time was rediculous, so I downloaded it via wifi/landline instead in under 5min. 3G reception where I live at present is not great; I have seen network speeds between 1.5 and 2.9 Mbps elsewhere in Auckland.

Are you using 3G or 3.5G? They're vastly different, i've only had 60kb/s max with just 40kb/s of consistent downloads with 3G. I'd say 170+kb/s is also a norm here in Malaysia on Maxis, can't say the same for other networks though. But I have to say, 7hrs seems like a gprs connection to me

Vodafone is supposed to have HSDPA all across Auckland varying from 1.8Mbps to 7.2Mbps and are currently trialling 21Mbps for 100 lucky subcribers (not me  ). In my area, it fluctuates dramatically from GPRS to a regular 400kbps or a very, very rare 2.9Mbps. This is despite living in ideal conditions (flat terrain, no tall concrete structures) with line of sight to a tower about 1 km away. What can I say? Previously I lived 300m over a slight rise from a 1.2 - 1.5 Mbps HSDPA signal with no significant signal difference compared to tests down below the tower.
I'm going to have to look into it further.

This shows how variable and unpredictable O2 data is. These were all done within the space of a few minutes with me sitting in exactly the same location
First up, these two very ordinary results
then out of the blue, this surprised me
then a couple of minutes later back to the rubbish speeds

I find that sort of thing quite often too. It's the way that data packets are sent and prioritised within a network I believe, add in cell breathing and the fluctuations can be extreme.
3.5Mbps+ Nice!  Ping is a little slow though, I have seen 190 often and even 95 one time.

latency on mobiles does seem extraordinarily high.
shame its not 3.5mbps all the time. I could live with that!
now that my iphone is unlocked you can bet I'll be performing similar tests on vodafone and tmob, and at variable times of the day, before deciding where to go next as I use data 90% of the time, and calls and texts probably just 10% of my phone usage.

While speedtests on the iPhone are convenient, even better testing can be conducted using a  mobile as modem for a laptop because when you open MyPhoneExplorer and click on Other > Monitor you can see the ID# of the macrocell you're connected to, which is quite handy if there are issues of poor performance for a particular cell.
No iPhone app can tell you the Cell ID# because Apple do not allow access to this info for running apps. There is apparently a Symbian S60 app that will check this on Nokia smartphones...

^ PhoNetInfo, PhoneInfo,and JbakTaskman show Cell ID# on Nokia S60s.
Highest ive had must have been +500kbps, using K850 as a modem.

If we were to conduct speed tests, wouldn't the computer processor/specs be a variable? Perhaps we would first have to determine what are the variables and what are the constants to understand what actually influence the speed

my best is about 1.2mbps dl and 300ish'kbps ul. using a w995 via usb and as a bt modem.
