If you mean better network signal, no, unless you have a UMA enabled handset, and your network utilises UMA, then yes

@dizzybee
Are you from the UK? Ask Vodafone about a femtocell known as the Vodafone Access Gateway.

Your network signal GPRS/UMTS whatever, will be the same. However, if your phone can make calls over wifi, you will get whatever wifi strength you can get from your router.

depends on how close to router and how fast your connection is.

I mean for calls and texts rather than internet. Like the bars in the top left hand corner. |

NO
Calls and txt's are not sent by wifi, they are sent via the mobile network. To improve your mobile network coverage follow the link I posted.
If you have a smartphone with a Skype App then you can make calls via wifi and you can always send emails via wifi but not txt. As with everything, you can have what you want if you are willing to pay for it.

See my post above. It can be yes if you have a UMA enabled handset and your network supports UMA.
I have a BB8900 and it is on Orange UK and that is UMA enabled, so when I am at home or connected to a "Hotspot", I can make calls, send texts and browse via Wi-Fi

Really? Not heard of that before, that would kill femtocell rollout stone dead if all networks and manufacturers adopted that.

Indeed it would kill femtocell and it should, in the UK it's only Orange that support it under their Unique service, but as truffle said, when in wifi spot, it'll let you use sms, calls and net, it's also cheaper to use it, you pay £x a month but that gives you free calls to Orange and landlines, Orange, landlines and other mobiles or Orange, landlines, other mobiles and international calls...
My BB sadly doesn't support UMA.

Thanks for the replys. That answers my question. So basically it won't work. Means I'm not tied down to getting a phone with wi-fi then. Thanks. |

It sounds like something BB have added to provide redundancy for corporate customers. Otherwise a UMA phone using wifi N would also eliminate LTE and WiMax rendering 4G obsolete in urban areas before it's even here.
5G is apparently under development: 12.5Gbps technology for streaming HD video direct from a TV camera to the On-site broadcasting vehicle and on to the TV station. Great for recording sports events without cables...
