As some of you may have read recently i have had a job interview down in Hastings on the south coast. I am awaiting a phone call hopefully next week. But. Something has come about you are not aware of. At the job interview i was told that i would be working in the hotel and living on the premises. I would have all my rent council tax gas electric water everything paid for. Except one thing. I get NO wages I was so shocked when i heard this and my thoughts turned to IS THIS LEGAL? The law says that whatever work you do you should be paid a minimum wage. Why then are these people offering a job with no wages but bills and a roof over your head? Why not do the normal thing and pay a wage then take out money for the rent and bills? They expect you to find another part time job during the daytime(its an evening job) or just sign on for money. This is backwards. If by the time they get in touch weather its to offer the job or not i should bring this up. If they offer me the job i would like to settle this but not with a dispute. Surely they should see its illegal? Yes i would not have to worry about rent or bills but i cant sign on forever if that were my means of income. I dont want to sign on If they already have all the bills and council tax covered through the hotel and my flat is on the premises then they are getting something for nothing outta me. Or any other mug that takes on the job. I am so fed up now i so wanted this job to turn out right. They are keen on me due to my experience but something always turns out wrong for me What do you guys think? Is it wrong not to pay a wage? I should call Acas.

I would call the Pay and Work Rights Helpline on 0800 917 2368.
Personally I would tell them you arent doing it completely free. You wont get job seekers allowance if you are working over 16 hours even if they are not paying you.

Yeah, I would shop them in. It sounds to me like if you did take on this job you would end up in such a rut that you would find it very hard to escape.

I would turn my back on it Sean - it sounds very dodgy to me. Christmas is coming up, how will you ever afford to travel back home or even send presents an buy stuff etc?

Yeah i see your point. Its so frustrating i really had my heart set on moving away again I am still going to wait to see if they ring and i will mention it as its just not right. Dont like the idea of working and signing on for poor money and i wont get away with signing on because after a year they force you onto goverment courses. Cheers for the advice i shall call that helpline. I just noticed that cos i am on Orange certain helplines are free and thats one of them listed on their website. Handy i say The hotel is closed Christmas too so getting back to see family for a few days may prove tight.

I understand the dilemma, and Goldenface is right: caution, that kind of setup quickly 'traps' you...

I must add, however, that it's somewhar 'ironic' that you 'never heard anything so absurd in a job'...considering your comments in the BNP thread!?!!! How about paying taffickers to get you into Britain where you're then called a sponge, while the traffickers steal your wages? Or the authorities won't LET YOU WORK, and then you're called a sponge? Or you die picking cockles for slave-'pay'?!!!

You see the point? You 'at least' they cannot threaten with deportation! You they cannot threaten with never being able to see your family again!

Man, do the right thing: report the folks, do NOT take that job!
And btw, a 'society' that forbids you to homeschool, forbids you to barter etc etc that 'society' owes you, that's right, OWES you its support! Stop this 'dole is undignified' BS!!! you did NOT create the 'system'!

Er i never asked to be shouted at or had a go at i asked for advice. And people who pay people traffickers know the risks. I am saying no more on this matter and if you dont like what i say then dont respond.

Apology accepted. I have my view on immigration the benefits system and other things but i certainly am not racist. I just think alot of things need to be controlled. Anyway this is off topic

Sounds not good to me, don't take the job. You'll find another good one soon or later, so I think you shouldn't take this one.

sounds like they were searching for a night porter.
don't do it unless they pay you something. starting a job knowing you'll have to find another job seems a strange start, bound to fail. I'm sorry mate I really wanted this for you, you were so exited.

I was really excited for this yes really had my heart set on it living by the sea. It still could happen if i have my way and mention this. But i guess if i mention this to them they probably wont then want to employ me because i found them out.
