My hard drive on my pc has packed in. Are they easy to replace, and will my pc recognise a new drive, or will i have to config it.

dead easy on a desktop, so-so on a laptop (my current vaio was awful to change the 250gb drive for a 500gb and took me a whole day!)
the bios should recognise the new drive so no isues there, but you'll obviously need to reinstall an O/S and your apps and your data unless you keep a backup (as I always do)

nice, thats what I use. I keep 1 full image copy and do weekly incrementals. saved me a couple of times and makes changing disks a doddle

Thought it was to good to be true. New drive installed, and loaded my os disc, only to be told after a while that no disk drive is installed. Opened the pc up and checked both cables. Help.

not sure it matters where its ATA or SATA? the cables are quite different and so would only fit the correct drive
try going into the BIOS (usually F2 or DEL key shortly after start) and see if the HD is recognised in there
where did you get the drive from? new or old? does it have jumpers which maybe are defining the drive as slave instead of primary?

@pmerryman: you better check whether the cables are well fitted in in the sockets on the mother board.

Its a new one from pc world. It has got 8 pins for the jumpers. It says 3 positions on the top of the drive for the jumpers but non said master or slave.

just had a thought... its been a year since I did my last drive but as I recall they come unformatted and you need to format them in the format you want, but I believe true image can format as it goes so just load up the true image recovery disk and start you restore

this is your hdd caviar green backside:
Those pins at the right should have the settings for the slave, master, cable select, etc. in the top as seen here:
It's not clearly seen from here though. I may be mistaken as i have had no probs with SATA drives.

Go to the CMOS features option and you'll see the drives you've got installed on it.
