2g And Edge Explained Please |

Hi Guys,
i recently made a purchase on a blackberry curve 8900 and didnt realise that is wasnt 3g lol oops,
im looking for a new provider and i am currently living in australia and as i cannot get 3g i was trying to find out on the net what the difference between just getting 2g and getting on with a provider which offers edge of which there is only vodaphone australia doing this,
the info on the net is a bit shit to be honest so i was wondering if one of you guys could give me a quick run through on how drastic if any the difference will be ?
i am planning on using it for stuff such as my gmail and facebook etc

where i am edge is a lot faster than gprs on 2g.

As far as i know EDGE is more like 2.5G, its meant to be faster GPRS, just like HSDPA (3.5G) is a faster version of 3G. EDGE gives very good speeds for browsing and lite downloads, even streaming from mobile YouTube on EDGE is possible. Where i am the difference between GPRS and EDGE is petty noticeable.

Edge hardly exists. Where do you get it its so rare. Where i dont get 3G i rarely pick up Edge. I was recently on a train and i had Edge whilst racing through the countryside on Orange. I never got it in the city once very strange but it is alot faster than GPRS.

not completely correct, EDGE is called 2.75G 
EDGE is up to 473 kbit/s
GPRS just up to 171,2 kbit/s

Actually @GUCCI.011 is right. EGDE is an enhanced GPRS.
EDGE is commonly 236kbps; Nokia announced an upgrade to 400+ kbps but I don't know how many networks took advantage of it when they would be better off going to 3G. In fact most networks skipped EDGE altogether.
GPRS is 50kbps but can be optimised up to 90kbps.
It's not worth mucking around with these old technologies anymore if you have HSPA available. Telstra's network is 42Mbps capable in places; I know it's expensive but why wouldn't you go for the world's fastest network speeds?
