I recently bought my c901 and was very happy with it (as usual with all SE phones). I just noticed that the screen dims and brightens every now and then as if adapting to the brightness of the surroundings. The trouble is, the dimming doesn't seem to be in sync with the ambient light. It just dims and brightens whenever. Is this a problem with my c901 or it's a feature that I am not aware of. Any help would be appreciated. Thank YOu.

At the top left hand corner of the display there is a tiny photo cell. It's very sensitive. If, for example, a reflexion hits the cell, the brightness of the display changes.

It's supposed to make the display brighter and turn off the keypad light in bright environment. E.g. when in direct sunlight the screen remains visible, or in pitch dark it isn't so bright that your eyes get sore.

But it's not supposed to change brightness of the screen randomly. I've never encountered such a problem.

Try some testing, put it at a source of light for a few seconds, then cover the sensor with your hand and see if the screen gets darker. If so, everything is ok

Whats probably happening is the sensor can't decide which level to adjust to. This usually happens where the sensor is in an area where there are 2 different levels of light close to each other. You also can get it when typing and the predictive text suggests words for you.

It's not a malfunction. In addition to the light sensor, there is smart contrast. It dims anything showing in the background. Try this: Message > Write new. Now press Option. You'll see that the popup menu will brighen but the message at the back darkens.

If it happens constantly under any light source just give it a reflash via the SE update service. I did have one phone a while back that used to constantly alter its brightness and a reflash fixed it.

Tutorial: Flashing A2 phones
Download link for required files for flashing.

Make sure you're confident about what you are doing so there are no regrets later.

Good luck

Forget A2 uploader unless you want to modify your phone. Go to the sony ericsson website and click on support/downloads/update service. Download it and follow the on screen instructions. Just make sure you remove your memory card and sim card before doing so. It not necessary but I find it better to do so. When I had my C901 the screen would flicker and had lots of black lines across it. Updated the phone to the latest software and everything was fine. The update doesn't cost anything and takes about 20 minutes max.

I have the latest R1GA028 firmware, but screen is darkish (brownish). I was posted in another theme that i have same problem with C902, and i just change dispriver0.dat (from olders C902 firmware) and everything was ok. Does somebody can make changes to driver for C901?
