Samsung Launches 12MP Amoled Cameraphone In Korea

The name probably doesn't tell you a lot, but according to Samsung, the AMOLED 12M is the world's first 12-megapixel camera-phone with built-in 3x optical zoom. There were other 12-megapixel models before including the Pixon12 and Sony Ericsson Satio, but the big deal here is the optical zoom feature. This lets you zoom in on the subject without degrading picture quality as compared with digital zoom.

Going by its 115.8 x 56.9 x 16.3mm dimensions, the handset is quite chunky and looks more like a digicam with phone functions. However it redeems itself with a generous shutter button and a mode dial for switching between the various shooting modes.

The AMOLED 12M, which ships in Korea early October, will have a 3.3-inch 800 x 480-pixel AMOLED touchscreen, 1,280 x 720-pixel video capture, touch autofocus tracking, T-DMB receiver and a pair of Xenon and LED flashes. There're also 4GB of onboard flash memory and a microSD card slot that supports up to 32GB. Unfortunately, the company doesn't have any plans to retail it outside of Korea yet.

It's actually the second camera with phone functions. Samsung did manufacture an 8mp camera with phone functions back in 2004 if I'm not mistaken.

If the picture quality is as good as a dedicated camera then it is special.

Small preview at gsmarena. Not impressed by photo quality! Its pre-production though, so its not the final quality I hope.
For me it's not worth waiting for this over the satio if the photo quality ain't better.

I was mistaken, the year was 2006 and the first Samsung camera phone I was referring to was a 10mp named SCH-600.

Its too big for a phone but ten outta ten for effort. I hardly ever bother using any zoom anyway on even my dedicated digital camera. So for me Satio will do It looks very much like one of their normal cameras in their N range. Though Samsung do make great cameras with fantastic picture quality. But for me its just way too big. What gets me though is some of these camera phones have better specs than dedicated digital cameras. Crazy.

Samsung lens is not impressive anyway, and the image quality on this phone just suck. and GSMArena people were blind when they said the image quality is excellent. I wonder how many people are going with this phone over their cheaper and better performing digicams.
