I live in the top flat of a small block and my neighbours below me are really annoying/upsetting me. Just to give you an idea of whats happening....
Wake up every morning to the smell of cigarette smoke drifting up the stairs and under my door; They constantly scream and shout at each other til early hours of the morning; He goes out and revs his car really stupidly for ages before driving off at warp factor 9; Plays really loud music all day; Has had TV license round because they haven't been paying it; But this is the one that tops it all....There was an arrest warrant pushed through our door, saying my girlfriend was going to be arrested!!!! When in actual fact it was for her downstairs.
Now because I'm in the property buisness, I know the landlady so I called her up and told whats been going on...
Today I get a phonecall from my missus to say that the landlady has been round, and they are now slagging me off. (And I haven't been home yet lol)
Was I right to complain do you think?

You certainly were. I would do exactly the same if I was in your situation. Why should you have to live with them making your life a misery.

I would suggest starting a diary of what happens and possibly record some of it to.

Of course you were right. Everyone has the right to live in their homes in peace and quiet. We once had neighbours who kept playing their bass too loud i called the landlord many times until eventually it stopped. I was not going to sit in my house every night listening to that booming through my walls. They have no respect of other people around them people like that. I never put up with that. There are laws stating that you cant make certain amount of noise past certain times of day. People these days are just assholes or maybe i am just becoming an old moaning git lol. I live in an area where alot of student houses are i am near Birmingham Selly Oak University. Our house is owned whilst many are rented for students and they can be annoying sometimes. You can call landlords and Environmental people to monitor noise. Good luck.

These sort of people usually rely on the fact that people around them won't say anything. That's how they get away with it. Then of course they play the blame game, but eventually it comes down to shape up/ship out, and they either fall into line or they go away.
You're right to draw a line in the sand so to speak. Setting boundaries is a normal part of relationships, it a shame when some people are so immature that they can't set their own standards and leave it to others to make standards for them.

I'm an old moaning git but I would'nt mind living next to a house that played some good trance/techno or drum n bass
at night. A mate of mine is a motorsport enthusiast and owns a modified Honda CRX racecar. He lives in an area where guys hoon around late on a Friday and Saturday night and he falls asleep to the sound of VTEC Preludes and Integras hitting 8000rpm... makes me kind of jealous really.

Bloody hell some people can sleep through anything. I am a light sleeper myself and need quiet. Though if anyone was to play some good loud music next door i wish it were U2 Problem is in the UK so many flats and houses are joined on to each other and noise is a problem through walls alot. Not always like that in New Zealand eh? You need to have money or a hefty mortgage to afford a decent detached house.

Yeah true. Most NZ houses are detached although urban apartment blocks have made major inroads recently.
That's because of all the Brits who came out here after WWII (like my grandparents) and built detached houses on quarter-acre sections and bach's in rural beach areas.

I had no idea you were into drum n bass. I've spent the last few months really getting into it myself!

Update for you all, I am writing this from the hospital bed......only kidding lol
When I got home, they had their door open so they could collar me, but they were both nice as pie!!! Think they realised they had more to lose than we do as we own ours and not rent. They sort of apologised and shook hands with me, so its all sorted.
Mods can close this thread if you like.
Cheers for the input though guys.
