When I startup my Pc and logon, it takes around 5 mins for everything to loadup (just started to do this). I am thinking something is on its way out, but not sure what. If I swap between pm profile and my daughters, the pc just sits there once its logged onto their profile, and doesn't seem to load up anything in thir profile.
Now the pc is around 5 years old, so do I take it somewhere, to try and diagnose the issue, or do you think its time to bite the bullet, and buy a new pc?

When did you install windows last time? If it is so long time then sounds to me you have to reinstall the Operating System again.
May be you should try to diagnose the issue before take it to somewhere. If the All hardware’s parts are ok then there isn’t a point to buy a new one unless you want a modern fast computer. |

when it freezes in your daughters profile, press ctrl+alt+del, click file > New Task (Run..) > type explorer.exe into the box and hit enter. it should bring up the start bar/desktop icons etc

First thing I would do is download and run CCleaner to delete all the useless guff that Windows accumulates over 5 yrs.
CCleaner is free and virus/spyware free.
Second thing I would do is find out how much RAM you have and upgrade.
You need 512MB to make XP run nice or 2GB for speed.
You need 2GB to make Vista run well or 4GB (32 bit) or 6GB (64bit) for speed.
If your PC is 5yrs old and not had any upgrades, I'd say you have between 256MB and 1GB of RAM and an upgrade is advisable, AFTER YOU HAVE RUN CCLEANER.
Edit: After running CCleaner, come back here and post how many GB of rubbish it deleted. It found 4GB on my old laptop and another member here retrieved 8GB! I now run it every day... it deletes about 80MB of unnecessary rubbish per day.

I clicked on CC cleaner, and run the program, but it says you need to reigster for full version to remove all the problems it has found.

Thanks. Now downloaded, and running CC cleaner.
Well it found around 500mb of shite, so will see how it goes. My Ram is 512mb.

512MB RAM won't help the performance of your machine at all.
Download and run the Crucial.com Scanner and it will tell you what the maximum you can upgrade to is and the exact specification so that you can buy the right RAM card(s). It will also give you a link to purchase off their website but you don't have to do that if you don't want to.
I recommend 2GB of RAM if your running XP, it'll go lightning fast and RAM is cheap these days. If you're installing it yourself, make sure you use a wrist strap to prevent static electricity build up or you could fry your motherboard as the store did with my last laptop (it took a month to die after it first showed symptoms of overheating).
I used an anti-static wrist strap to upgrade my new laptop and A-OK.

I don't use an anti-static strap, but I always leave the computer plugged in (but switched off) and always touch the metal case. Since its all grounded then the strap isn't really nessecary

You might want to check your start up programs too.. I don't know if this is suggested. If not then follow this;
Start > Run (Shortcut Windows Key + R)
Type: msconfig
on the tabs goto: Startup (Clear all unnecessary applications)
Then on the tabs: Services (Stop all unnecessary startup services)
I did this to my macbook running windows xp / 7 / Vista 64bit and has shaved off 15 sec on startup.

Task Manager? Ctrl + Alt + Delete
I use a Vista Gadget to watch my CPU and RAM usage in real time.
