Did anyone see today's Gadget Show on Channel 5? They did a section of the show about the difference between the far east and the rest of the world in technology. It almost makes you sick. Souel in Korea is the most wired up city in the world. They showed one woman who has 1000 mega bits per second broadband for under £10 a month. The mobile phone tech they were showing over there was incredible even mobile tv was high definiton almost. Question is why are we so far behind? Why when we have east meets west with Sony and Ericsson are they so behind? Where does the problem lie? Is it our infrastructure thats lagging? I have always been facinated by countries like Japan with their clever brains and amazing technology.

We had mobile TV here for a while. Virgin Mobile had it running but nobody used it so they stopped the service.
Some places in the UK will be getting silly spped internet soon, including bournemouth. There is a company putting fibre optics in the sewers and will provide high speeds direct to peoples homes. This will only be 100mbps to start with though, no where near 1000mbps they have in korea.

Yes. For such a small country the UK still has so many black spots for broadband. They said i think the south Korea is almost 100% fully covered for broadband. Almost everyone has it.

I just watched that segment (was watching the athletics earlier), and...
1. I'm using Virgin 50mbps and getting a real 48mbps down the line, 1.6mbps up the line. Thats plenty fast enough for most, if not all that I do. When I do want to download high def DVDs then maybe 1000mbps will be nice, but for now I prefer to but the real thing! (otherwise I'll also need a multi-terrabyte drobo or raid setup to store it all!)
2. I don't want a mobile phone watch, at least not for a few more years until they are sensible sized
3. I definitly don't want one of those toilet seats
actually... I do want a multi-terrabyte drobo!

Yeah i guess 50mbs is decent enough for most people. Guess what we have not had we dont miss. I would never bother with a watch phone its just pointless and fiddly. As for the toilet seat lol enough said. They did show a toilet roll holder last week on the show where you can put your ipod in a listen when your having a you know what I met Jason Bradbury he stayed at the hotel where i work some years ago. The Gadget Show is mostly filmed in Birmingham. The best gadget is Suzie Perries legs

Nice camera angle Notice the way the camera always goes so low and zooms in on her legs. In an attempt to make the show sexy. It bloody works. Rookwise wow nice video but sadly not enough

At least your not as bad off as we are over here. Only 1 undersea cable connects us to the rest of the world, so bandwidth costs are horribly expensive and speeds are crap. The speeds are slowly getting better as the last mile gets upgraded but we'll eventually get to a point where the undersea cable gets overloaded and we have 0.1KB/s broadband.
I am on 2mbps ADSL2 broadband, and my friend is on 10mbps ADSL2+. Thats about as fast as the residential broadband goes upto in this country

My download speed maximum is 22/23 Kbps at broadband connection. I have to pay 1000tk (around US13$) for every moth. |
