Portuguese Zon Multimedia is launching in the beginning of September Europe's first commercially available internet service with 1 Gpbs.
Until now, only Japan and Korea had this kind of service.
From my understanding this is based in EuroDOCSIS 3.0 with some tweaking, allowing this kind of speeds, not with fiber but using coaxial cable.

Yep...
There's even a lawsuits filled by Meo (another triple play provider) against Zon because of the use of the name "Fiber" in their commercial offer, because Zon started as a cable TV provider and their access network is based on coaxial cable, and Meo's network is actual fiber.
Currently, both offer 100Mb internet + ~100 Tv channels + Phone for around 65 euros/month.
