Last week, O2 a UK based carrier said that Apple was due to roll out a new firmware update for the Apple iPhone in the coming weeks. Well now O2’s prediction has come right. Apple released the iPhone 3.0.1 OS Update on iTunes. The update was released a day before earlier predicted.

Yeah i updated mine the other day. Absolutely no noticable changes, just the security fix which you'd never notice anyways.

Apparently the update doesn't even break any jailbreaks or unlocking solutions (as is usual with new iPhone OS updates) it's just a straight up copy of 3.0 with the SMS security fix added. Good on them for releasing it nice and quick.

Hmmm...

Apple waited until after the full explanation of the vulnerability to release the fix; Google's fix was already out. And they said they responded within 24 hours which conveniently neglects to mention that they had be notified of the vulnerability a whole month earlier. Has the countermeasure been tested and confirmed by an independant source? I won't feel completely reassured until it is.

I don't appreciate having to download this file which amounts to 8% of my monthly data cap and tied up my iPhone for an hour, just for a tiny patch, especially when one considers that there is another update (3.1) on it's way. There goes yet another 230MB+...

This is getting to be on par with Microsoft Updates.
