GPRS versus ISP |

If I want to dial a free ISP I have found that most 0800 and 0808 numbers can only be accessed by a BT phone line so that your mobile (used as a modem for your PC) wont dial them.
0845 internet dial ups are charged as set in your tariff and they work, for me thats 10p per minute which can work out cheaper than GPRS calls.
Anyone found a way to get connected cheaper or found a way round the free ISP dial up problem and GPRS expensive deals?

Well the only way I can think of is if u have the original Genie monthly or PAYG SIM.
I stil get free unlimited WAP thru their 915000 number. My T68i is locked to T-Mobile so I use the SIM with a 7110 and get 9600kpbs connection.
I once used it for at least for 30hrs in 1 month web browsing on just £10 top up! Was dreading a call from o2 regarding my 'unreasonable usage' but I guess they didnt bother.
Dial up is not really worth it on mobiles and GPRS is too expensive for web browing thru a computer, I learned from a £20 charge on my bill for d/l 1MB on T-Mobile GPRS.
I did read that GPRS is free on the Genie tarrif for the mo, maybe till end of jan or summin, but its a hassle getting my phone unlocked as they seem to want to keep it overnight and one shop even said 5 days!

Yeah I was thinking about changing to other contracts I might look into Genie then. Do you have to have a contract with them or can you just pay for the GPRS charges?
Thankfully I dont think my phone is locked but I cant be sure plus there is the hassle of being tied to a contract! |

I am also looking for a cheaper alternative to GPRS. Is it as simply as dialing a local ISP to gain internet access via my phone? I don't mind the slow speed, I'd just rather having something cheaper. Is there a cheap alternative available for the Americas-region?

catch23, you can dial from your mobile to the Internet using an ISP with a data enabled phone, but some freephone numbers i.e AOL, Freeserve, etc.... may not work as is the case in the UK as for us these dial ups must be from a British Telecom (BT) landline.
Put your dial up account details in your phone and try it.

Freephone dial up numbers should work from a mobile if you drop the leading zero. So 0800.... becomes 800....

why would gprs be cheaper? I think it is $10 for every 10 megs roughly... but I have unlimited minutes for nights and weekends! I might as well make good use of those unlimited minutes by using my t68i as a bluetooth wireless modem for my pda....
nobody in the americas region has tried something like AOL via the T-mobile service? |

so what if it's faster? It's not really cheaper when you have unlimited GSM minutes, but limited GPRS data.
I'm wondering if I use GSM instead of GPRS, would I simply make the AT modem commands dial the ISP number instead of dialing the *99# thing?
