Mp4 files converted by M3 for W580i wont play on c905-why? |

Hi. Got a working W580i @the moment. Only, the port is broken and I cant use the headset-which I need to work. Looking @the c905. Put my M2 from the W580i in at the store, and only a few of my mp4 files (Converted by M3 software-its all I use) could be played. No mp4s converted from DVDs played. I love M3 the mp4s it creates are very hi quality. Obv. the c905 screen is bigger than my W580i, but what model choice will work when using M3 -- which has a phone model choice list. Did sony even have a 2.4" screen when M3 was around? Is anyone still even using M3 to convert video files to mp4 these days? I want this c905 but only if I can create hi quality mp4s for it. Is the c905's screen more advanced, or the technology too different perhaps? I only want to be able to convert video files and DVDs to mp4s that will play in a c905- using the highest quality software, whatever it is. And, I'm going on a long trip so I'll actually really need a solution now! I'll play around with M3's phone types and try again @the store, daily, until I leave for UK. What do you se users who care about video quality use to convert? Any input at all is greatly appreciated in advance. Sincerely, Tom (stressing out and bummed-cos I wanted to buy a top notch se in the UK!) |

Yes sir! The c905 can play mp4-it even played some of my mp4s that I converted for my W580i 2inch screen. Do you know of another se model with a 2.4 inch screen like the c905 has? I Tried total before, maybe i used the wrong settings cos the quality was poor. M3 makes awesome mp4s-i just need to set it to the correct size output. And there are a lot of se models! Need one with 2.4 inch screen like the c905. Thanks a lot. |

you 905 has a screen resolution of 240x320 so any SE with that "size" screen should do.
I reject your reality and substitute my own. |

Thanks for the size info guys. M3 (which I'd really like to continue using) has the choice of a few W models, a few K models and a few P models, ipod, UIQ3safe, a couple of Z models, no C models though. I tried to convert a DVD using the settings for a wW850 but it crashed halfwasy through (this is normal for M3 I'm afraid).
I fear the C905's hi tech screen boasting 200,000 or so might be getting in the way. But SOME of my M3 created mp4 files played - short ones converted from .avi - no mp4s made converted from DVD play on the C905. I really like this phone, but I have to be able to convert movies successfully for it.
So....I know it's been long discussed, and I'm still searching on this forum; but what is the current preferred anything to mp4 converter people are using (for phones like the C905)? I don't wanna change converters (since M3 makes DVD-like mp4s, they're awesome), but if I have to I will.
Did M3 die out; get upgraded? That mysh guy who created it seemed to have disappeard last I checked. Before that he was answering questions on M3 and helping users with problems exactly like this.
I read that the codecs used to create the mp4 file must match the codecs of the phone. I know that M3 can make a C905-playable mp4 file, but I can't remember which settings I used for the ones that DO play in the store's test model.
Tinker with M3 or try another converter?
Any ideas on what the current top ranked converter is- what do you guys with 2.4" screens use?
Thanks so much,

Yes, use the Ipod H264 profile and video codec "x264". It will convert to 320x240 @ 30 fps. I use a video bitrate of 336 kbps and I also use sharpen 5 % and choose to crop 16:9 to 4:3. Gives very nice results.
Using the mpeg4 codec as I used to with my K800 I got files that just would not play on the C905.
Also this:
Posted: 11:59 Nov 09 2008 Just be careful when using M3 for C905. All my movies for K800 are unplayable by C905. With M3 use h264 for video and not mpeg4, that will work. Other converters, such as Super, yield playable videos with mpeg4 codec though. I have also observed pretty bad picture lagging on many of my converted movies when using C905, while some of them play fine.
Posted: 15:11 Nov 09 2008 The MPEG4 standard defines 21 profiles of which C905 only supports the Simple Profile. Likewise, the standrad for H.264 defines around 14 profiles of which C905 only supports the Baseline profile. When converting videos into MPEG4 or H.264 ensure your tool is configured to use a correct profile. Beside profiles one also needs to consider what "level" of the standard C905 supports. For H.264, the standard defines 16 levels for each profile. Each level describes things like max bit rate. I have not found any explicit info about this for C905, but with what I know C905 should be capable of supporting level 1.2, which corresponds to 384 kBit/s. If you use MPEG4 rather than H.264, then level 3 should be used. In the above, I'm not sure if C905 supports levels below those stated. One would think it should, but considering Hansen failed to play videos made for K800, who knows. FYI: K800 seems to support MPEG4 Simple Profile Level 0 and H.264 Baseline Profile Level 1b (128 kBit/s). It should be noted that H.264 is actually part of the MPEG4 standard. When refereing to MPEG4, this usually implies part 2 of the standard and when refereing to H.264, this usually implies part 10 of same standrad. That's all info I have found. I have to add that he's talking about the M3 settings here.
Looks like choosing 'Ipod' from the phone model drop down, and 'x264' (instead of mpeg4?) in some other drop down - prolly in the video menu to get M3 to convert reliably for the C905a.
I might have to leave work early to get this started, M3 can take a while to finish up.
Either way, I'm going to try this on a small file (several ways); put the MP4 output file on my M2 card and take it to the store and try and play it again on the display model.
If the MP4 converted file made with M3 and these new settings plays in the C905, I'm buying the phone the second I see picture and hear sound!
Like I said, some files DID play (I dunno why....cos they were converted from avi maybe?) so there's definitely hope for use of M3 with this device. I have had awful results from *every* other software, and everyone who hasn't tried M3 thinks their software choice is awesome......until I show them what M3 can do!
Just pulled this on the store rep; she told me
"oh yeah, I can convert to MP4, and the quality is great!"
Showed her a CSI: Miami (recorded onto DVD from a regular cable TV broadcast, then converted to MP4 via M3) and she was floored!
"Er........not like that though" she said!
If this device can't play converted MP4 files, then I can't buy it
I love watching converted TV shows/DVDs/avi files on my phone on trips, in bed, while driving etc. (joke)
I read something about the C905a recording video in 20 second chunks or something.....in MP4 format (I'm used to a 3gp video recording with unlimited length).
Can anyone confirm the limitation to 20 or 30 second video clips?
I also read that recorded video is supposedly "only good enough for watching on the phone" whatever that means. Hell, 3gp is NOTHING to write home about - MP4 can only be better than what I'm used to, right?!
But, I kinda like choosing how long I record for - not the phone cutting me short. Weird. Also, could have sworn that I read the C905 supports up to 16GB of M2 memory; but now I'm reading 4GB all over the place - bummer if this is true. 16gb would be awesome - for movie and photo storage!
It's a step up from my W580i (which isn't too shabby either).
Anyone know if I can still use Opera Mini for web browsing on the C905? Or will it clash with some pre-loaded 'browser'? I really don't want mini-browsers or other stuff overcomplicating matters; I'm happy with my java Opera Mini set up. And all games are instantly removed by me when I get that phone home. Unless there's a decent chess game or something.
Thanks again guys, sorry for the lengthy comment!

TomLogan-my c905 records video in mp4,unlimited length or short clips when set for mms only.you should try cowon media for converting to mp4,works flawlessly on my c905(mp4,320 x 240,video 384kbps,audio 48kbps)
http://www.4shared.com/networ[....]a=atleast&sizevalue=10&start=0
my c905 uses a 8gb m2 and should be ok with 16gb,opera is ok and it comes pre-installed with kasparov chess.

And, by 'flawlessley' do you mean DVD quality or better than 3gp quality? Have you seen an mp4 converted by M3? Its a beautiful thing! Crystal clear picture -in part cos of screen size, but just crystal clear picture on a W580i! I need to take this experience to the c905. Its the best se available via a carrier ever released. Again, many thanks for the help. Tom Logan |
