No sound via headset - headset not the problem |

I love my W580i.
Suddenly, I get no sound through the headset. The headset icon shows up, but no sound at all.
I did get some audio for a minute or so earlier, but that was a one off - I can't get anything out of the phones.
I confirmed it's NOT the headset itself - so it must be something internal..with the port maybe.
But, the phone charges and transfers data with no problem - everything else works fine.
Now I'm faced with sending the phone to SE. Is there anything I can do (other than rebooting, cleaning port etc)?
This problem is weird and occurred overnight - I'd love to find the problem and fix it myself (unless it's some internal port wiring issue). But OVERNIGHT??
I rely on the headset to watch movies when I travel.
Any ideas from anyone are greatly appreciated in advance.
Also, what can I expect from SE's repair service (phone shows red dot of death under battery, although it has never got wet and is only 3 months old).
Phone works great - except for this. Has anyone else had this occur? What happened here - wiring failure within the port is all I can think of.
Please, any comment will help.
Sincerely bummed,

sometime "dirt" on the contacts of the fast port or connector can do this.
use a pencil eraser and give the phone contacts and the headset contacts
a good scrub .....

Thanks for the reply! Believe me, I've cleaned the contacts very well - the phone charges and can transfer data via USB.
I fear I may have cleaned the contacts too well, since I now have the red dot of death showing under the battery; so SE wont even touch it - forget the repair of this device, it's now a 3-month old phone without one tiny feature. If you don't like music, movies or radio, this is the one for you!
Maybe the rubbing alcohol I used for the contacts activated the water damage dye cos i know I DID NOT GET THIS PHONE WET, we get 4 meters of rain a year here! It must be the humidity. Plus, my first w580i died from water damage, so I have been careful.
It sucks, I have a perfectly functional phone EXCEPT for the headphones - which I will need/would like to have for my trip to the UK soon.
What should I do?
I guess I have to pay retail AGAIN for a new SE (if I want to use headphones).
I could get a nice model (not available in the US) for cheap in the UK.
Off to look at Sony Style to see what they have....I'll bet that the prices are insane tho.
Does anyone want to buy my at&t branded W580i (black)? Works great (except the headphones)!
Can anyone recommend a good slider with good video player etc., since I'm gonna have to get a new phone eventually (I heard the W760 is kinda slow)?
I don't need a fantastic camera or complicated "mini Windows" - I like java apps and opera mini just fine.
Any model numbers worth checking out?
Or, does anyone know a better vendor for a new SE (branded or not, locked or not - I don't care!)
Lady at SE says Best Buy and even Wal-Mart carry unbranded SE phones now - but prolly not here in Hawaii.
Thanks so much guys,

NEVER use liquids near the port .... it's soooooo close to the mother board.
You can have charging and data transfer but no headset quite easily as the
pin out on the fast port is different for each device or connection that is being
plugged in. The only exception to this is the "pass through" charger where ALL
pins are connected !

Both sections of the headset are confirmed as working (i have 2 headsets-mixed and matched em to be sure, also tried headset on an At&t store model too-worked great. The speaker works too. Phone just cant put any sound out thru the port. My bad for trying to clean the port I guess- never again, another (semi) brick! Thanks all. |
