Firmware upgrading w850i |

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to firmware updates, so please be gentle.
I got the w850i on an Orange contract, but it now has a pay-as-you-go SIM - still Orange though.
I've had a search here and it seems generally recommended to remove the branding, and it seems like a good time to be doing its first firmware update anyway.
DaVinciTeam software seems to be mentioned, but I've also found the Sony Ericsson w850i firmware update site
http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]eapplication/w850i?lc=en&cc=gb
which seems to have a simple and free firmware-updating software app which uses the existing USB cable that was supplied with the phone. I guess their firmware is unbranded but I don't know for sure.
Am I better going with DaVinciTeam's software (which I think is not free) or the Sony Ericsson's free software?
Also, I think that the phone must still be locked to the Orange network as it has never been unlocked. Will this prevent me from installing non-Orange or unbranded firmware?

Use CodeClaw Ultimate CDA Generator to generate a generic CDA customize_upgrade.xml. Upload it to tpa/preset/custom with XS or FAR + JDF, wait for the "Please wait" message to go, turn off then connect to SEUS and reflash. Result... an unbranded/updated W850 for free! Simple!
This will not unlock your phone and you'll still need your Orange sim but you could always patch unlock it.

Thanks. I think I followed most of that. I just started the CDA generator and it detected my phone as:
Model W850 (no "i" suffix though)
Firmware version: R1ED0001
From what you said, it sounds like I should be using the "How to debrand other platforms" procedure in the help file, and not the "How to debrand A2" procedure, yes?
As I'm in the UK, I guess it is a "Generic....UK...." CDA entry that I need to select but there seem to be two of them:
Generic_UK CDA102677/58 R6A
Generic_UK CDA102677/95 R3A
Any idea which I should be choosing?
Also, looking at the Sony Ericcson page again that I mentioned earlier it does not seem to mention firmware upgrade, so I was beginning to think that perhaps it was just for updating the applications that run on the phone - not the actual firmware/OS. Can I just confirm - the procedure you described will give me the latest firmware as well as unbranding the phone won't it?

Your phone is not A2 so look at the debranding other platforms. I'm not sure of the difference in those twe CDAs but either should be ok as both are generic.
SEUS updates the firmware so back up your data first. Follow the procedure as I have described and you will have a debranded and updated phone.

JDFlasher's script drop-down list does not have an entry for W850 - only W800 and W810.
After a bit of searching I've found various confusing posts like:
and a list with the DB2020 phones that are bringed to cid53 by SEUS:
....
W850i
....
What does DB2020 mean, and does this mean that I should select "db2020" in JDFlasher?
Is "cid53" an OS version or something?

So you've decided to flash yourself. Yes your phone is DB2020 which is the platform. The CID is the sort of like the phones security level. If your going to flash yourself I suggest using XS++. This isn't compatable with CID53 but is more user friendly. Connect to XS++ and post a log here so we can get more info of the phone.

Thanks for your help, but I think I'll have to give up with this.
XS++ does not seem to detect the phone even though Ultimate CDA Gen did. When I exited XS++ and tried to run it again it just hangs before its window appears (spinning busy cursor). Rebooted the PC and ran it again - it ran OK but this time it would not list some of the USB ports - the phone is on COM6 but I can't even select it now.
The flash drivers won't install either. Tried switching the phone on with no SIM and pressing the C button - Vista detected it as a FLASH device and starts to search Windows Update for the driver - I can't stop it from doing this. It then says "Waiting for user input" and after a few secs the phone springs into life and Vista says the flash device has been unplugged! There's seems to be no way to tell Vista to install the flash driver froma local folder.
Perhaps this works better on XP but I only have Vista.
This is really frustrating - I think I'll just put up with the original firmware.

righty then im here to help. okay to debrand properly you need to use wotanclient. it costs £5 a Credet and it puts the lastest Generic firmware on, It works well on vista also, Now on wotanclients site you can download a usb flash driver to be used with wotanclient. and this will also help with other flashing programs such as Xss+ and FAR.
Any more help you need let me know |

Thats rubbish. You don't need to pay anything to debrand. Inform yourself better before confusing people.

Thanks again for you help. I ended up using just the Sony Ericsson update program. It went without a hitch. Hopefully I will now have the most recent firmware for my phone, even though it is still Orange branded.

Hi, sorry to resurrect such an old thread but, I need some help debranding a W850i.
It is stuck with the horrible Vodafone menus, and splash screens, but I want to be able to have just the normal WALKMAN skins, and menus.
I have tried FAR, but it still ends up with Vodafone branding, and trying to find Generic firmware is tricky for this phone.
I know that I can use WOTAN to debrand it but, I am only using this phone for experimenting, and practising on so I don't really want to spend any money on it if at all possible,
Any help would be fantastic.
Cheers.

The only thing I can't find is the custom...

Hi, sorry but I should have mentioned, the phone is CID53, and not CID52,
Thanks for your reply.

I can't find CID53 MAIN's over 4shared. I recommend you to do the CDA trick. Change your CDA to a generic one and then update it with SEUS.
