All phones have an IMEI, which is like a serial number, they can look that up on a table and realize its not an iphone.

yeah, but I'm guessing they don't do that.

I put my contract SIM into my new 3GS and took that payg sim and put it into my Nokia 5800
the O2 system certainly realised that I hadn't used that sim in that phone, but rather than block me, or text me saying I was using the sim innapropriately, they actually sent me several texts to configure the phone wap/mms/mobile internet settings

that suggests to me that their system doesn't look out for iphone sims in non-iphone phones

There have definately been reports of people getting text messages saying they need to put the sim back in an iphone, most get at least 3-4 months of usage out of it before getting a warning.

fair enough, I didn't manage to find any comments via google for people that had an issue like this

seems a bit hit and miss though when O2 clearly have a sure fire way of trapping such usage the first time another phone fires up with the iphone payg sim in it

I have read of people using them in broadband dongles and being cut off. Here for instance:-

hmm. but they would do that with any SIM being used in a dongle where the SIM doesn't have an appropriate data plan for PC or tethering usage

Good point. I haven't read about anyone using it in a phone being cut off.
