There are some java games which uses rar extension, so it's easier for download them. In that case you just rename *.rar to *.jar

When download *.jar files with stupid Internet Explorer, IE save with extention *.rar !!!
Must open My Documents > Tools > Folder options > View > unmark Hide extention for known files > click OK
Then rename *.rar -> *.jar
I prefer Firefox when download *.jar files (Firefox haven't this problem with extentions).

I'm not sure that you can generalize the jar/rar behaviour in that way! rar and jar are two entirely different file formats, even though they may serve the same purpose in some contexts, i.e. containing files in an organized directory structure. The rar format is a proprietary format owned by the company that makes the packing/unpacking program rar and winrar while jar is a container file format very close to the unix tar format, and was invented by the guys that created the programming language java. In some cases, it is not possible to distribute files of the file format jar from a web site, since some web browsers (IE) may either treat them as dangerous (like .exe files) and not pass them on, or they try to run them. In that case, it is common to either rename the jar file to something else (which is somewhat stupid) or pack them into either a zip file or a rar file. In the first case, it's a simple rename that does the trick, but in the second case, the jar file is packed into the archive file and it must be unpacked. Winzip and Winrar was mentionend already. I would recommend the program 7zip (www.7zip.com which is capable of handling almost all packed file formats. |

Don't convert it.
Right click it and change ".rar" to ".jar" with out the "" marks obviously.
