Global teen survey shows Nokia's mobile lead falling
London, England - A survey of 112,000 teens in 30 markets around the world shows that Nokia is still the number one mobile phone brand, but its market share is falling.
Despite three years in a row in the number one slot, only 21 per cent now cite Nokia as their favourite, compared with 29 per cent last year. The company was top in 15 countries in 2008, but now leads in only 13, according to this year's Global Habbo Youth Survey Brand Update.
Sony Ericsson is rated second globally and number one in nine countries, including Austria, Germany and the UK, up from eight countries last year. But Sony Ericsson's overall popularity has also dropped - in 2009, 18 per cent of the world's teens listed Sony Ericsson as their favorite, three per cent down on the previous year.
Motorola has seen the most dramatic loss of teen support. In 2008, Motorola was the third favorite global brand, number one in Canada and Brazil, and number two in seven other countries. This year the company doesn't make the top five.

Guess the youth market is massive. But why though if this is so bad is the 5800 such a massive hit?

Its brand popularity rather than what phones teens are actually using. I think the survey asks which is the most desirable brands amongst teens.

The Sony name in Ericsson will always be seen as appealing to teens particularly when you think of Playstation. Pity it hasn't translated into huge revenues for SE.
Nokia's REAL market share is also being eroded and Samsung is doing some damage. Then there are the other manufactures like Blackberry and Apple helping to chip away at Nokia's huge share. Last year I predicted that Samsung will close the gap between itself and Nokia and I still see that happening. In 5 years' time the picture is definitely going to be different.

I think its the Walkman phone branding on phones that is probably most popular with the teens.

True. Walkman and Playstation are all Sony inventions and the target is/was mainly the youth.

Blame the LG KS360 Chatterbox for the lower percents for SE and NOKIA lol, that phone seems to be flying off the shelves.

I dunno what the teen market is like topside but down here teens all use cheap prepay phones and not touchscreen or high-resolution-camera phones. The cheap Moto's have all but disappeared and cheap Samsungs and LG's are everywhere. Cheap Nokia's will always be the main focus of the NZ teen market, but in the absence of any decent low end offerings mid-range from SE, model's like V640i, G502, W910 and K770i have been going for a song. You might think this would be a great strategy to shift some big numbers but buyers of low-end phones seem to be suspicious of well featured models and stick with their basic call and text phones.

Here in the Netherlands LG's cheap touchscreen Cookie is very populair among young teenagers (prepay buyers), due to the touchscreen hype.
Older teens (with contracts) prefer smartphones.
