How much are you looking to pay?
I got my D40 which I would recommend in an instant for £220 just before Christmas.

SIGMA SD14 is £390 brand new, from Pixmania.
3 images sensors, for full colour reproduction, and they manufacture a large variety of lenses, which also, are the dogs b*llocks. I use a SIGMA DG Macro lens on my EOS 650, and in terms of construction and quality of images, it's very good! APO glass versions are even better, apparently.
I've heard good things about the camera, and it's more 'proper' than the D40, 450D, 1000D lot.

WW - might as well get a used 350d which has 8.1mp comapred to 6mp on the Nikon.

Also use a canon and a Nikon see which one you prefer the feel of, I find Nikons to be stupid as they ae back to front to the Canon system which I personally am used to.

Fatreg - my dad wears a 350d on his elmet but he skydives

Arien - sorry to sound camera retarted but I thought Sigma was bought out, and the new model (S2?) was like a lexus of anothe rcompanies product range.

Forgot to mention - Look into the 1000d and if you'd prefer a Nikon the D60.
1000d Body only
D60 with kit Lens
Canon 100d with Kit Lens

Although for what you want to do I would forget the kit lens and go straight for something like a 15mm lens. Cant find the D60 as a body only though yet. I will keep my eyes peeled though.

To add abit more to my crazed camera rambleings, the Sigma has the best Megapixels, but im not sure how popular the Sigma lens mount is nowadays (im fairly certain its a different mount) and it has a lower ISO, but i'm not to clued up on ISO's so im unsure whether you should factor this into your buying choice.

Happy hunting! Dont forget to check Wikipedia out for hardware statistics

I already have a D40 that is great

I was more looking for a second hand old one that i dont mind getting damaged when out doing all kinds of X sports.

Alot of the times we are places we should not be, and when the fuzz or security turn up there is no time to put it away carefully just gets thrown in a backpack
