Sony has announced the development of a "coin-sized" high definition camera module.

Designed for use in security and industry, the 8.3-megapixel effort is smaller than a £1coin measuring in at 9.5 x 7.1mm.

The "MCB1172" from Sony Europe's Image Sensing Solutions Division is capable of delivering 720p, 30fps video and includes movie stabilisation, face detection, autofocus and motion autofocus.

There's also a high sensitivity mode and a slow-mo function, delivering 120fps as well as the option of 16x zoom.

Now available for mass production, products with the module in will likely hit the business markets later this year.

This module sound as good as the one in Omnia HD and maybe even better... I wish to see this thing or something similar in atleast 1 of the 3 high-end's (as per rumors... one being the IDOU) SE is to release in the next 12 months...

Finger crossed...

Remember the good old days of the K750/W800/W900? How the competition were struggling to catch up with ? Today is struggling to catch up with the competition! While they have been neglecting video recording on their camphones other makers have come out with HD recording. Only now seems to be realising that consumers want their camphones also to shoot good videos - not only for MMS, which their current technology is only good for, but also for shooting the same kind of videos which you would use a camcorder for.

Wow!
I hope SE will make a slim candybar cyber-shot phone with this module.
Slim, candybar, with better built quality, metal casing like C902.
And please don't downgrade the spec of video recording.

no way they're gonna put that module in anything thinner than at least 15mm.

HD video camera on Idou would make it competitive when you consider that Samsung already has it. I have a feeling that Nokia and LG's offerings are likely to spot HD video recording. This will put SE in a better technological space that they need and maybe garner more sales.

Hopefully someone at SE will see some sense and include it and extend Idou's shelf life.

In whichever cell they put it they better put it soon. In any case, it won't be a thin cell. They should copy samsung a bit better, if they want to be competitive. And actually this module is nothing new. What they really need is a true HD mode - or even better: a miracle - Now that will put them ahead of the competition

I never really agree with you often mario but, yes, they need to do something special very soon. Idou is on the right track but it is too long coming unless they adapt it to current and upcoming competition.

You know EMS, there was a time, long ago, when I was looking forward to my first top class cell, a mighty SE P800. I can't even remember if this forum was around by then (2002!?!?) Certainly I was not a member. (only became one in 2003 or 4) Anyway, SE with the P800, managed to capture my imagination, not exactly easy to do with a realist, like me. Se was supposed to 'shake' the world of mobile phones and I went with the hype. But weeks of waiting turned into months and another cell got announced by another company. It was not as hi spec as my dream cell but, althou it was announced later, it got released sooner ! Huh, what a shock it was - for everybody, me included. And not only that but it run on a spec down symbian, more like a cell and less like a pda. Now, keep in mind, I come from a computer era from early '80s when one has to program most of the stuff because there was nothing out there (unlike today). I instantly recognised the 'power' in a more simple system (Ada vs. Modula2 comparison come to mind - do a google/wikipedia). I went with Modula2 (and later C and eventually C++) and because of this thoughts I gave a try to the 'new commer'. Guess what - I instantly fell 'in love' with it and cursed SE for been so slow and full of excuses/promises. I went with that cell and only change it when I got a free upgrade (of course a cell with the same os). I was so sure, Nokia has a winning combination with the s60, I ended up buying shares from them when a promissing cell come out with the said OS. Of course I sold all my shares long ago. (is all documented on the forum). What the hell, even made a profit Eventually the whole world embraced 'my' beloved OS (which has changed a bit over the years as most things in life do). Now even SE dream about 'my' OS after dumping theirs. Makes one think, doesn't it.
