iPhone moves up to 1.5% world market share

Regardless of the economy, Apple has managed to claim 1.5 percent of the market in the early part of 2009, according to ABI Research data. The California company's 3.79 million iPhones sold in the first quarter were enough to eke out the amount, which gives Apple an extra 0.4 percent of the total market beyond the 1.1 percent it had just at the end of 2008. The expansion comes at the same time as significant shrinks by market leader Nokia, which dropped to 36.2 percent, and struggling mid-range firm Sony Ericsson's fall to just 5.6 percent.

Oh, c'mon. It has changed the way people use their devices. Admittedly, I'm not someone who is glued to their phone all the time.

For instance, there was a guy using his iPhone to navigate his way to Liverpool Town Hall on a busy street using gps and he was having difficulty.

But whats wrong with just asking someone? I just pointed him in the right direction.

That's a general GPS issue not an iPhone issue.

Apple might have only 1.5% of the total market which includes all the millions of low end phones with which it doesn't complete but if the market is narrowed to 'converged devices' and using Nokia's figures, then the iPhone has 10% of the market up from 5% for Q1 last year. That's just below all E-series sales and closing on N-Series too.

Next years figures will be interesting. Will iPhone equal sales of all N-Series + all E series?

We are just gona have to wait and see, realy impressive results by Apple, especialy considering that they ONLY HAVE TWO PHONES and are absolutely destroying the competition. I Still dont like iPhone though gota give credit where its due.

Those results were obvious.

While the iphone may be good... OS wise... Apps wise...

...I still think its the Apple brand name creating the sales, not the device itself. 9/10 people i meet only own it because its 'Apple'.

Slightly off topic, I noticed the ipod sales grew from last year. Just goes to show people choose brand over (not suprising) quality with a lot of things. Because the ipod is definately behind in terms of sound quality (obviously the most important factor when determining 'quality' in an mp3 player) compared to other manufacturers. Even the Zune. But cant expect every consumer to notice the difference in quality.

The billion app sales give the lie to this idea that people are just buying the brand. To the people that own it, the iphone isn't just a trendy phone or even just an iPod, it's a smartphone and they're using it as such, downloading apps and extending it's functionality in ways that Nokia, for example, rarely achieves with it's S60 customers.
