Scotland Is a "feeble little nation"

MPs are demanding an apology over remarks made by the outspoken historian Dr David Starkey.

Dr Starkey described Scotland as a "feeble little nation" and said Robert Burns was a "deeply boring provincial poet."

He made the comments on the BBC's Question Time programme after he was asked if he supported a public holiday for St George's Day.

Dr Starkey has refused to apologise and says he stands by his comments.

To boos from the audience, Dr Starkey said: "If we decide to go down this route of having an English national day, that means we become a feeble little country, just like the Scots and the Welsh and the Irish.

Its amazing how so many people complain over a simple jest. Although, it is a touchy subject.

Where I live, the council tore down St George flags. Outrageous!!

Edit: Having seen the vid again, he wasn't joking when he said that. He's an ignorant tw*t.

How can he say the English don't make a fuss about Shakespeare? Its one of England biggest tourists magnets for crying out loud!

He also made a kind of self-deprecating joke about England being distinguished for it's lack of a national dress, but that went over the BBC's (and numerous complainant's) heads as well!

Well how come we celebrate St Patrick's day? A lot celebrate Independence Day and what about Australia Day?

I bet the Aussie flag doesn't get forceably removed from public display in Australia?

Row as Liverpool Council takes down St George's Day flags

I agree with you how we aren't allowed to celebrate St.Georges day frankly its PC gone mad but i think people are kind of to blame as well if everyone did their bit and brought out their english flags certain councils like the one you mentioned would give in eventually

The problem is a lack of education as well as most english people don't even know anything about st.george's day and why we should be celebrating it and the other reason is the fact the some people associate the english flag with neo-nazi's and the BNP so you can understand their hesitation only if the fascists knew that St.George was actually Turkish.

But don't you think half of the problem is allowing the George Cross to be hi-jacked by the right wing in the first place?

Surely if it can be taken back from the right wing then isn't that the way to go?

Apart from the fact that the UK has less Bank Holidays than any other country in Europe, surely we need more reasons to celebrate!

I was in Spain last year and they must have about 30 public holidays.

I doubt the average Brit knows who St Patrick was. Education. You're right in that respect.

True, the only way that can be done is every english person and british people of ethnic origin started celebrating the English flag I really respect americans on how they wear their fllag with pride shame we don't have that over here. I have a lot of friends who are asian and frankly they wouldn't be seen dead wearing or carrying an english flag because they automaticaly associate it with racism now that can change but it has to start at school and with the government bringing in legislation to take back our flag and start celebrating us being english

Its a funny old world. When it comes to Athletics and the footy World Cup, the flag gets paraded around willy nilly by all supporters - regardless of their origin.

The mind boggles.

Track suites, trainers and hoodies at the moment...

It's like I said in another thread recently; it's about time the English people got their backbone back. But arrogant so-and-so's like that particular 'gentleman' don't help the situation at all.
