Sony Ericsson to make Android phones for Orange

T-Mobile has the G1 and the upcoming G2, while Vodafone has the HTC Magic. So the folks over at Orange probably thought: hey, we could have some Android handsets of our own.

Reportedly, the Taiwanese newspaper Commercial Times says that Orange’s Android phones will come from Sony Ericsson before the end of 2009.

And while the phones will bare SE’s brand, it’s said they would be outsourced to Foxconn – the manufacturer that also makes Apple’s iPhone.

The consequences of cost cutting and staff reductions I guess. I wonder if they could slip in a Multi-touch screen while they're at it...

Well the X2 is expected this year (possibly June) - which is also being outsourced to Foxconn. That might feature the multi-touch we're waiting for.

If that's true them i'm sure X2 will be android based? because apart from that OS, there is no other OS that supports multitouch, it is very unlikely that SE will use WebOS or iPhone OS anyway

I tend to think the same, they are giving the others a major head start.

Will Android really take off and be around for a long time? Are Google good enough to get it right first time when UIQ failed, Symbian is going through a major overhaul, WM sales are flat, Blackberry is having a resurgence and Apple is pretty untouchable despite the recession?

Other than being open source, how do Android phones differentiate themselves from WM devices?

They better cancel their membership with OHA and focus on Symbian Foundation instead. I highly doubt they can support 3 platforms under a very small developer group. idou will end up another massive failure (software stability wise) if they keep doing things this way imo.

@razec exactly. They should focus and do a better job, especially software wise. Look at Nokia, most if not all of their new phones come with symbian now. Their firmware updates actually introduce new features for old phones, and features from newer phones are often back-ported to the older models, SE should watch and learn. My next phone will certainly be a Nokia.
