How do rate this. Some guy was on Sky News today speaking to cameras saying what he would do if he was chancelor. He said cos of the amount of text messages sent per day in Britain he said he would put a tax on it as it would generate huge amounts for the country. What does everyone else think of this? I did not get the name of the guy talking he did his own short film on Sky News about what he would do if in charge. Crazy or what? That would make texting go up would it not? Does texting have to be taxing?

Yes indeed its like when they wanted to tax chocolate to stop people getting fat. Taxing it wont stop people eating it even if its more expensive. Its like smoking people know its bad for them but they still do it regardless of tax or price. If someone is over weight and wants to eat chocolate they will eat it weather its taxed or not. Ah greedy MPs dont let Mr. Darling hear about tax on text messages cos it will give him ideas what with billions sent every day in the UK. Huge profits for them lol

I would pay a penny tax on each one. Aslong as the money was siphoned from the operators.

10p a bloody text your having a laugh, i'm sure as hell 9p at least is profit.

We already pay tax on texts in the form of VAT.
I saw a program late last year that said for the amount of data used in sending a text it is cheaper to communicate with Hubble than it is to send a text.

@jcwhite

I believe that was the dispatchers program you are referring to. I too saw that quite a good program actually gave a lot of insights into the world of mobile operators.

---off topic---

To everyone else, LBC 97.3 in the mornings with Nick Ferrari....the best Radio Show I've found. This guy makes a lot of sense, if any of you get a chance I highly recommend you check him out.

Today he was going on about how much of a big brother state we have become with the authorities suggesting the use of the terror laws to install CCTV cameras to be able to monitor how and when you take out your rubbish.

--------------

And back on topic, soon they'll be taxing you for waking up in the morning....just wait...

Erm they are free inter network ie Orange to Orange is free... they just use standard protocols that are on the network as part of GSM...

as JC said, we already pay VAT on texts...

It won't happen people so don't fret.

don't worry about text tax. The budget is the one you should worry about. Recoverin the billions given away by the government is gonna hit us via tax hikes soon enough.

the government wants to tax texting because demand for it is inleastic (demand doesnt change with price) these are the best areas to tax because you can charge what ever tax you want.

a good example of this would be Fuel, people will buy petrol etc at what ever price its at (inelastic) so the goverment has like 80% tax on it.

Another example why the government are cons is because they tax addictive products. e.g. Cigerettes they can charge large amounts on it because once people started they find it hard to stop at any price.

They will pretend they care about you but they're just filling their own pockets!

I tried to keep my rant non technical, i do economics
