I love my w580i. I love the mp4 rendering I can get via M3 software - everything - even the silly pedometer (which I'm fairly sure isn't even accurate).
Today, some bad things happened:

I was using it in light rain, then
it worked fine - only with a few lines across the middle
I figured it would dry out over time and wasn't that bothered by the lines.
Then, I thought I could help it dry, cos..well I just want my phone perfect!
I took a hairdryer to it - close and pretty hot.
Then I stuck it in some rice and took it out again cos I think this is too slow an approach - and I've seen friends dry out a completely submerged phone and dry it out to normal functioning.
The rice blocked the slider .
I worked to free the grain.
Then I turned it on to see the 'red C button flash of death'
Remember, it was working fine with just a few lines in the display area before my 'helping' it dry.

So, I have a suggestion:
THE HAIRDRYER APPROACH IS NOT ADVISED. USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. In my case, the hairdryer must have pushed some droplets of water into a place where they did way more damage.

I should have let it dry on top of the cable box (nice and warm which worked for my scanner) it would have been a better ''dry''.

And, please, a question or two:

I'm afraid that I might have to go with the (cringe) W760 - which seems to have its problems (freezing; slow; first edition; same ole cracking keypad; stupid branded AT&T navigation stuff etc.)

Can anyone tell me re: the W760:
i) how does it compare to the fantastic W580i?
ii) DOES THIS PHONE HAVE THE SAME VIDEO MEDIA PLAYER, SUPPORTING MP4 FILES (I love my 2 gb M2 card full of movies and TV - I can fit a surprising amount of film on there)

I lov(ed) to install liberating apps that I use daily: Opera mini for facebook and real browsing (which syncs favorites with my PC); twibble; java apps for world time and stuff -- I refuse to use the dull 'm.' sites.

Also, I am a victim of the cracked keypad known issue - so I never took advantage of that although eligible. Maybe I could get a replacement and hope they don't notice the dye pack dot!

As of this writing, I'm without my ole buddy, as it sits on the cable box - I'm hoping it'll just turn on after a couple of days (although I've red that once you get the 'red C button flash of death', it's over.)

Please, someone give me some direction (or some comfort) here; I cannot convey the sense of loss.

I want to get a new W580i NOW. But then I think of the sketchy availability status. Maybe I should wait on the ole faithful for a night's drying at least.

What's up with the W760?
This is the worst situation for a W580i lover and intense dailyuser.
I'm very upset.

The W760. Well then its a fickle thing I might say. Its hard to hate it and its very hard love it. Having owned one for 6 months it reset for me every 5 hours. But thats because I had installed corrupted games and glitched it up badly. So yeah the software do not coming asking me. Otherwise it lagged quit a bit but yeah like I said do not take my word for software. The phone on the other hand-build quality and such- I can tell you some stuff.
The camera is not all that amazing. Its 3.2MP lacks auto focus and freaking flash LED but yeah whatever. If the camera is not all that important good for you. Otherwise well yeah.
The build quality for the early models was not that bad. I had one of the first phones to be bought here. I actually bought the first one but yeah anyway it is not that bad. The keys are very comfortable even in that tight space. Hell it might be the most confortable I ever felt. The paint if you use the phone a LOT wears off for the upper buttons but yeah whatever. The slider weakens a bit but not that much.
Sound. That was what killed me. I found it a bit lower then the W580's sound. Hell no it was way lower. But still audioable dont worry.

The phone overall? Nothing great but sure as hell not the worst phone.

Thanks for the speedy reply!

What about the video player and mp4 capabs? Still the same as the w580i- full screen with ffwd etc? Is it easy to move movie files to and from PC?

Again, thanks a lot.

Yep. and it can rotate into landscape for viewing movies. I think the W580 can as well but yeah. MP4 capabilites I think all SE have such. Also go here
http://www.mobile-review.com/review/sonyericsson-w760-en.shtml
and another couple of sites to get proper reviews. But yeah over all it has the down sides but great phone. If you want the W705 is simmilar but has LED wifi and better sound.

Thanks so much for the replies guys - greatly appreciated.
I talked to the local repair guru, he says he can take it apart and try a dry out, and that just placing it on something warm without disassembly is useless (?)

Anyway, he has the W580i available (no white tho). He also has the W760c available. I dunno what else he has - he's 'kinda affiliated' with AT&T.

I'm interested in all the replacement phone suggestions, however, I'm in the US (under AT&T) and the SE phone selection is poor - a couple of flip phones, no candy bar type and the product line basically stops at the W760c.
I'd love to get my hands on a (debranded, not unlocked) decent SE phone, but they're just not available unless I use ebay or some third party outfit and pay hundreds!

AT&T loves me (they threw in so much extra stuff with my 580i!!); I could easily get a free phone from them - but nothing 'better' than the 760, and prolly no chance of a 580i. Why did they stop selling this great phone and replace it with the 760? Just for the 3G upgrade?

I'm guessing that those who replied suggesting different models are SE users outside of the US, right? Or am I missing a way to get a top notch SE phone AND service through AT&T in this country?

Many, many thanks.

Well yeah we are basically outside of the US. If the line stops at the W760 you are missing out. If you love touchscreen and music there is the excellent W960 which has the UIQ which I must say while they will stop it is pretty great and then you have the W980 while being a complete smudge magnet is pretty cool. That is why the US is a bit behind but meh whatever.
