I picked up one of my favorite phones today the Sony Ericsson K850i. I loved this phone when I had used it before and never had any problems with mine.

As the camera is the main feature for me, apart from calling/texts, I decided to do a shootout with my current handset the C902.

First a little note on build quality. Many people complained about dust under the back cover of the k850 and fingerprints all over the back. Well this k850 I picked up cheap looks like its been run over with a lawn mower and there is not a spec of dust anywhere under the cover, and I use Zagg invisible shields on all my handsets so finger prints are never a problem anyway.

I did a little "drop test" with both handsets, dropping them from shoulder hight to the ground. The K850 although all plastic actually faired better as although a slight mark on hard surfaces (although not when using an invisible shield from Zagg), on carpet there was nothing. Whereas the C902 battery cover came off and battery flew out both on carpet and hard floors...not very impressive seeing as I like the mostly metal/solid build of this phone (and yes the edges scratch/chip just as easy as the K850 without the invisible shield).

The Shootout: Round 1
-----------------------------

The K850i is using a modded cam driver for better results. Easy to install (2minutes). For this test I am using what I thought was the best Cybershot v6.0 BestPicColor [Edited by pohuman v6].

C902 wins here as the turquoise walls are turned blue for some reason on the K850i.

Here we see the turquoise carpet in macro mode being turned blue again by the K850i, C902 wins for correct colours.

Very simular although slightly more detail in the soil on K850. Slightly darker K850i picture. See 100% Crop on the next image.

Detail is good on both handsets, brighter C902 shot.

Low noise on both but K850i keeps turning those turquoise colours blue. Some more editing on that driver pohuman?

For me the K850 just edges this one by a tiny amount for slightly better detail and more pleasing green colour on the plant. Noise is low on both.

Again slightly darker K850 shot, detail is good in both, red comes out darker on the K850 here.

K850 wins this one for lower noise, noticable in the text on the mini JCB. Darker red on K850.

So far C902 is the winner in the camera department for me due to the un-natural blue on the K850 shots, although noise and detail is sometimes better. It is also worth a note that the bigger K850 screen DOES make a difference when viewing photos back and showing them to friends as we all do with snapshots, and I sometimes felt the touch screen on the C902 was annoying as I often pressed them by accident changing a setting I didn't want to.

So its a close call really, with the k850 further modding the cam driver would bring it to C902 standards, with a bigger screen, better flash, and no annoying touch buttons to press by accident, however the C902 is better for taking quick snaps.

There are more shots to come, I couldn't be bothered to do them all at once, I want to go play Fallout 3. Low light with and without flash will be up soon.

Since your using a modded driver it's possible the colour correction in that driver is not properly set up hence the blue to turquoise .

Yea I realised that, I chose to use that modded driver as (if you look in the K850 pictures topic) most of the shots are taken using that driver and they come out really well, better than the original driver.

Perhaps pohuman can comment on them as he modded it?

i own both phones and K850 is awesome in macro and flash, but when we comes to ordinary auto pics there haven't my k850 a chance against c902 accurate colour rendition, sharpness and less noise.
you will see that if you use original firmware on K850

nice pics though

Yes and I own both as well (obviously), but the point of this is to show how well the K850 can perform with an improved driver, and with the exception of the turquoise/blue issue the K850 seems overall better than the C902 from the full size comparisons I have done. Noise is almost the same on both handsets, and detail is sometimes less on the C902 as you will see from some of the 100% crops, but only by a tiny amount, which you will also see later on my low light shots.

For a quick snap shot the C902 is more reliable though.

U r right man. Cybershot v6.0 BestPicColor [Edited by pohuman v6] is the best camdriver for k850 to the date. I tried many (7 or k850 cam drivers yesterday (included Strong 1.4 Beta2). Pohuman is the sure winner in detail, beautiful contrast & nature-wise.

edit... i agree that Pohumans cam driver is good, (a bit more tweaking on the colour rendition is left, (so green gets green and not blue)
