On a sale in a company in NZ, you could get 32gb for the same price  but they sold out in an hour

about 3 months ago i got a high quality 8gb one for £10 its just dirt cheap!
i remember my first computer having 100mb of hard-drive space! still got it somewhere! |

I have the 8GB version and they are worthless! It takes a good 20 minutes to copy 3GB of data in it!

20 min ????..is it USB 1.0  (yeh, i know it depends what type a flash memory you use...some are quite slow, but that often the really old ones)
anyway, i copied a Simpsons TS (vob file) 4.32GB into my new Kingston 16GB....(it didnt take more then maybe 5-7 minutes)
i depends also what kind of CPU you have (im using a T7600 2.33Ghz[4MB L2-cache])..DELL of course

No its USB 2.0
its a regular kingston data traveler. its very cheap so i guess thats a trade off.

When something states its USB 2.0 does not automaticically imply that it runs at the hi-speed USB 2.0 of course. CPU doesn't have much to do with it, it copies as fast on an Atom or a C2D, HDD speed will only be a bottleneck if your read speed is lower than the maximum write speed of the stick.
The best way to test the speed is with a nice little freeware tool, also be sure to change the stick to "optimise for performance" in windows, just don't pull it out, but use save remove. This will increase the speed a lot.
I bought a 16GB stick of play.com and it is mad fast for the 16 pound price
Used h2testw to get these results, with a 256MB test file:
Pendrive Compact II 2GB (forgot the price, been a while):
Writing speed: 17.0 MByte/s
Reading speed: 23.8 MByte/s
16GB play.com "own" brand (16 quid):
Writing speed: 11.9 MByte/s
Reading speed: 26.2 MByte/s
SanDisk cruzer micro 2GB (3.50 new from ebay):
Writing speed: 6.32 MByte/s
Reading speed: 12.7 MByte/s
Kingston data traveller 4GB (got it as freebie with my laptop):
Writing speed: 2.36 MByte/s
Reading speed: 17.4 MByte/s
So my little test shows that my old Pendrive is the fastest followed by the play.com stick, which I highly recommend, sure it's not pretty but boy is it fast
And yes, I use them all, the 16GB for storage of movies and backups and such, the 4GB holds my XP/Vista usb install and tool kit + Winpe, the 2GB Pendrive holds Backtrack for pentesting and the likes, lastly the 2GB SanDisk holds rescue and backup tools, and has some space left for extra tools and anti virus/spyware definitions. Yep I'm an IT guy.
All in all, check the manufacturers website for the read/write speeds, the harder they are too find the slower the stick will be. Also try and look for reviews/customer feedback on sites that sell it, and hope someone like me has properly tested the speed with a good program

By default the software wants to write the whole disk full and verify it, this it to test if the drive is really as big as it claims, some sellers sell fakes that pretend be 16GB but only appear to be 16GB to the OS, once you start filling it up with real data they stop at 2-4GB, a lot of MP3 players sold on ebay also use this trick. But it is also good to test the speed of the drive by selecting a custom size, 256MB will do fine.
