O2 and Vodafone Confirm Network Share
The operators will share networks and work on joint builds of new sites
O2 and Vodafone have confirmed the deal that will see them share mobile network assets across Europe. The partnership was revealed by Mobile at the start of this month (March).
Telefonica and Vodafone will use the agreement, which is expected to save ‘hundreds of millions of pounds’ over the next 10 years, to aid the roll-out of their networks. The two companies said the deal will pave the way for improved mobile broadband coverage across the UK.
In the UK, both companies will focus on joint build of new sites and consolidation of existing 2G and 3G sites.

This is good news for the mobile industry. It makes sense for both networks to join the masts they have to improve and expand coverage for both Voda and O2 customer's. I am pleased with this news |

What about the existing Orange and Vodafone mast sharing? I see this mast sharing never working very well. I am on Orange now but when i was on Vodafone they had no 3G where i live but Orange do. But cos they apparently share masts i thought i would get 3G signal on Vodafone but no nothing. Am i missing something here?

As far as my understanding is, that Orange and 3 and T mobile are going to share masts together.
Apparently Orange and Vodafone operate on different frequencies and the sharing agreement was not working out well.
O2 and Voda operate on the same level of frequencies.

Frequencies have nothing to do with it.
The deal between Vodafone and Orange was tentative at best, and hadn't been signed, and as time went on, Vodafone started to ignore Orange and now they've signed with O2, Orange are left in the ditch.
T-Mobile and 3 combined their masts about a year ago now. Orange are still independant.
Just to make this clear, they are sharing masts but they're not splitting the network, it just means they're making each other stronger rather than sharing the entire network, or else the networks would collapse.
My opinions on this forum are that of my own and not of the company I work for. |

Voda and Orange did sign an agreement to share masts and are still continuing to do so. But Orange will be sharing with t mob and 3 too. |

Well, this is good news.
o2 and Vodafone are the two networks with strongest signal in my town.
My friends on Vodafone can recieve signal in my local, but me, being on o2 can't.
Will this change or not?

3 and TMo are sharing at the moment but O2 and Voda are the biggest networks in the UK so it can only be better I guess.

I don't see why not, they will be sharing masts and reducing ones that they don't need. so it should improve over time. At the end of the day. This recession has hit Voda hard and they are having to lay off loads of staff or make them redudant and they have also freezed bonuses (from reports i have heard). So they are looking at cutting costs, such as rent of land spaces where masts are etc, and O2 are also looking at cutting costs to save money, so this deal makes sense.
@ goldenface your right mate.

I find Vodafone terrible for call quality it always sounds so distorted with a robotic sound to calls. Orange in my opinion has best call quality coming close second O2 but O2 can be quite noisy. When i recorded my voicemail on Orange 3G is was as clear as a landline.

Erm... not quite correct. They have made 500 people redundant out of 10,000 workers in the UK.
Also the annual EPP payment which is based on the company performance, will not be paid out due to not reaching targets. This payment is never guaranteed.
Back to the topic, this network share is good for both companies and in the long term should be good for consumers.

IMO! Voda and TMo have the best networks by a mile!
TMo is unbeatable right now, for data.

In what way do you think they have best networks? Just asking out of interest.

sorry must have mis read it then.
But I agree with you. It is a good thing for both networks.
Goldenface tmob being better is a matter of opinion really. I guess it all comes down to the coverage where you are living as well as what you want for a priceplan. When I had t mob at the time i noticed they mainly focused great coverage on mainly london and the bigger cities not much good in rural area's. Not sure if that has changed now.
But as i said before. I am glad they have this agreement. |
