Official Press Release:

London, UK - Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (“Sony Ericsson”) announced today that its net sales and net income before taxes in the first quarter of 2009 continue to be negatively affected by weak consumer demand as well as de-stocking in the retail and distribution channels.

Although final results may differ, Sony Ericsson plans to ship approximately 14 million phones during the first quarter of 2009 with an estimated ASP (average selling price) of EUR 120. Gross margin is expected to decline both year-on-year and sequentially. Net income before taxes is estimated to be a loss in the range of EUR 340 – 390 million, excluding restructuring charges in the range of EUR 10 – 20 million.

Sony Ericsson will announce its first quarter, 2009 financial results at 07.30 UK time/08.30 CET on April 17.

Thats quite a large shipment drop but they did say that they didn't expect to return to healthy profit until the latter half of 2009.

PLUS, the 1 quarter is traditionally the quietest so this was only to be expected really.

No doubt media pundits will have a field-day with this - re-hashing the old story of doom and gloom.

This could be another result of the financial crisis, remember that it is not SE alone that suffers. nokia and others too.

I think though in SE's case its a combination of things. 2008 wasn't a good year - considering SE had been riding high for quite a number of years.

The law of averages got to them at last. But i am hopeful that things will change. The C510,the W705 and others are good additions to the portfolio and the Hikaru should generate some hype. The IDOU is also expected by Q3.

Thats right, they did say it will take a while for them to return to profit. They have a good hold on the UK market at least.

Its not just SE, all companies are going to report lower sales. Nokia layed off 1700 workers recently and I am sure their Q1 will be lower then expected.

A drop for a company is a good thing in some cases. Riding the high horse in the charts being mister big resulted in the company releasing a lot of good phones mixed in with the bad. If you saw through the bad(like I) and got the good you were happy. Otherwise yeah. So now that their profits have lowered and sales went down by 50% they might see through this that their products just dont plainly cut it anymore and they need to release phones with 5MP and all the fancy stuff. It will surely get repetitive and the onlything that differs is design but hell other companies have been doing it longer then them and its not going to hurt anyone. But hell where i am the only nokias you see around here are maybe a couple of the first generation expressmusic and a couple of the low ends. Otherwise every has an SE. Even cab drivers.

This is not really surprising. Their lack of proper support and decent updates makes it so that many will stray away and go to another brand; Apple, Nokia for example provide a steady stream of updates to their phones which introduce new features along with fixing bugs. SE should have done the same but they prefer to stop making updates for most phones after they hit the market for about 6-12 months whilst the competition still fixes and updates phones out much longer (N95 comes to mind).

We all know with cross flashing in mind that it is not impossible to give newer features to older phones, SE simply does not do it. Why doesn't the P1i gets the upgrade to the newer UIQ that runs on the G series? Why don't they provide smile shutter support to older Cybershot phones? Why don't they give us Flash Lite on phones that can support it? Why don't they provide this extra bit of service and customer care to us? It's a real pity to see how their throw away their loyal users for some extra quick sales, it is clearly biting them in the butt now.

My new new phone will also not be a Sony Ericsson, especially with my latest support experiences where they ask me for more details which I provide to then let me wait 2 weeks to receive a default answer that clearly showed they did not read a single of what I wrote to them nor investigated the details I've sent them, which they requested. This kind of "services" will cost them customers. I'm one of those people that gets asked by my friends and family what to buy next, and whilst I used to advice SE I will not advice SE any more, I'm sure I'm not alone.

Also the total decline and saturation of the phone market has something to do with SE losing almost half of it sales, but it's not a major part. Too bad for SE they used to be pioneers and have decent service and support, but today it's all about making a quick sale and then forgetting the customer.

Just my 2 pence.

Things cant be that bad. I noticed the C905 in the contract charts on the no.1 slot. But that may have been before everyone took it back realising its another bug riddled phone :-S
